10 Animals You Didn't Even Know Existed!

Listed below are the most odd animals that look like they came fresh out of your worst nightmare or maybe your best dream! You probably didn't even know they existed, and you probably wish you never did!

1. The Aye-Aye

Before I go into everything about this animal, let's all just take a moment and be thankful that we don't live near these things! And if you do, i'm sorry, so...so sorry!

The aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a type of lemur, a strepsirrhine primate native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth and a special thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker.

It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unusual method of finding food; Get this, it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood using its forward slanting teeth to create a small hole in which it inserts its narrow middle finger to pull the grubs out. This foraging method is called "percussive foraging". From an ecological point of view the aye-aye fills the niche of a woodpecker, as it is capable of penetrating wood to extract the "food" inside of it.

2. The Maned Wolf

When I first saw the picture of this thing i literally jumped! This is an almost 4 foot tall wolf! If you saw this running after you, well, run forest run!

The maned wolf bears minor similarities to the red fox, though it should be noted that it belongs to a completely different species. The adult animal stands 67 to 107 cm (26 to 42 in) tall at the shoulders, averages 125 cm (49 in) in head-and-body length and weighs around 44 to 75.16 lb.The maned wolf is the tallest of the wild cats. The long legs are probably an adaptation to the tall grasslands of its native habitat. The tail measures 28 to 45 cm (11 to 18 in) in length. the beautiful fur of the maned wolf may be reddish brown to golden orange on the sides with long, black legs and a distinctive black mane. The mane is erectile, and is typically used to enlarge the wolf's profile when threatened or when displaying aggression when fighting off dangerous predators.

3. The Naked Mole Rat

Does this happen to look like something you saw in a nightmare before? Probably, right?

Typical individuals are 3 to 4 in long and weigh 1.1 to 1.2 oz. Queens are larger and may weigh well over 2 oz, the largest reaching 2.8 oz. They are well adapted to their underground presence. Their eyes are quite small, and their ability to see is very poor. Their legs are thin and short; however, they are highly adept at moving underground and can move backward as fast as they can move forward. Their large, protruding teeth are used to dig, and their lips are sealed just behind the teeth to prevent soil and dirt from filling their mouths while digging. About a quarter of their musculature is used in the closing of their jaws while they dig - about the same proportion as found in the human leg. They have little hair (hence the common name, the Naked Mole Rat) and wrinkled pink or yellowish skin

4. The Gerenuk

Gerenuks' have a relatively small head for their body, but their eyes and ears are quite large. Only the males have horns and they also have a more muscular neck than females. Both sexes have ruddy brown coats with a paler underbelly . They have short, black tipped tails. The Gerenuk is easily recognizable from its distinctive long and skinny neck which can be stretched further if needed for activities like feeding off the taller branches of bushes for food and undergrowth of the desert.

It also has remarkably long slender legs which are another great advantage as they can gallop away into the distance at very high speeds from any form of predator trying to attack. However, because of the extreme length of their legs, they can be more liable to fracture of the leg bone. There have been numerous occasions in which Gerenuks' actually snapped their long legs due to tripping and stumbling along the ground.

5. The Lamprey

I think I might have woke up screaming one time because I saw this in a dream once?

While lampreys are well known for those species which bore and chew into the flesh of other fish to suck up their tasty blood, most species of lampreys are not parasitic and never feed on other fish.

Adults physically resemble eels, in that they have no scales, and can range from 5.0 to 40 inches long! Lacking paired fins, adult lampreys have large eyes, one nostril on the top of the head, and seven gill pores on each side of the head.

6. The Blob Fish

This certainty isn't the most prettiest looking creature in the ocean!

Blobfishes' are typically shorter than 30 cm. They live at depths between 2,000 and 4,000 ft where the pressure is several dozen times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy. Instead, the flesh of the Blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. Its relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats in front of it such as deep-ocean crustaceans.

7. The Babirusa

Does this beast not look like it just got cursed by the devil?

The Babirusa are notable for the long upper "horns" in the males. The upper canines of male babirusa emerge vertically, penetrating though the skin and curving backward over the front of the face and towards the forehead. The lower "horns" also grow upwards. The "horns" of the female are either reduced or absent. The structure of the male’s "horns" vary by species. In the golden babirusa, the upper "horns" are short and slender with the alveolar rotated forward to allow the lower "horns" to cross the lateral view.

The Togian babirusa also has the same characteristics. The North Sulawesi babirusa has long and thick upper canines with a vertically implanted alveolar. This caused the upper "horns" to emerge vertically and not cross with the lower "horns". The Babirusa also vary by species in other characteristics. The golden babirusa has a long, thick fur that is white, creamy gold, black or gold overall and black at the rump. The hair of the Togian Babirusa is also long but not as that of the Golden Babirusa. The Togian babirusa has a tawny, brown or black fur that is darker on the upper parts than in the lower parts. The North Sulawesi Babirusa has very short hair and appears bald. The female Babirusa has only one pair of teats.

Holy Barbirusa! That is a lot of species of Barbirusa!

8. The Star-nosed Mole

The star-nosed mole is covered in thick, blackish-brown, water-repellent fur, and has large, scaled feet and a long, thick tail, which appears to function as a fat storage for the spring breeding season. Adults are usually only roughly 5.9 to 7.9 inches in length, weigh about 2 oz, and have 44 teeth! The mole's most distinctive feature is a circle of 22 mobile, pink, fleshy tentacles called "rays" at the end of the snout, from which it derives its name. These are used to identify food by touch, such as worms, insects and crustaceans.

The star-nosed mole lives in wet lowland areas and eats small aquatic insects, worms, mollusks, small amphibians and small fish. The Star-nosed Mole is also a good swimmer and can forage along the bottoms of streams and ponds. Like other moles, this animal digs shallow surface tunnels for foraging; often, these tunnels exit underwater. It is active day and night and remains active in winter, when it has been observed tunneling through the snow and swimming in ice-covered streams.

9. The Yeti Crab

Kiwa hirsuta (Often called the Yeti Crab) is a crustacean discovered in 2005 in the South Pacific Ocean. This decapod, which is only 5.9 in long, is notable for the quantity of silky blond setae (resembling fur) covering its pereiopods (thoracic legs, including claws). Its discoverers' called it the "yeti lobster" or "yeti crab".

The animal has strongly reduced eyes that lack pigment, and is thought to be blind. The "hairy" pincers contain filamentous bacteria, which the creature may use to detoxify poisonous minerals from the water emitted by the hydro-thermal vents (plumes that emit hot gasses underwater) where it lives.

10. The Giant Isopod

A giant isopod is any of the almost 20 species of large isopods (crustaceans related to the shrimp and crabs). They are thought to be abundant in cold, deep waters of the Atlantic ocean.
