9 Songs With The Word "Song" In The Title

In honor of David Letterman's retirement, and without completely ripping off a top 10 list, I thoughts I'd list 9 of my favorite songs with the word "song" in the title. I'm not sure why either.

9. "This Song" by George Harrison

This was was the most blatant and ironic use of the word Song. He wrote and named it because he was accused of stealing the melody of the song "She's So Fine" in his hit song, "My Sweet Lord." He was so angry about the accusation, he wrote a song called This Song which was only about This Song. Lot's of entertaining legal references in the song. He was angry.

8. "The Song is Over" by The Who

I think Pete Townshend wrote this "song being over" as a metaphor for a love relationship being over. And he was sad. "This song is over/I'm left with only tears/I must remember/Even if it takes a million years." He also says in the song "Our love is over." That's how I figured it out!

7. "The Redemption Song" by Bob Marley

This great song is about mental slavery, which may seem like a new concept until you think about your job. It has a great opening guitar lick and it featured the very odd opening lyric, "Old pirates yes they rob I." Don't know why he didn't say me...

6. "The Song Remains the Same" by Led Zeppelin

This starts the Led Zeppelin portion of the list. They also wrote The Lemon Song, The Wanton Song and the Immigrant Song. I guess they were like, "what should we name this song?" How about the "whatever the fuck this song is about" song?

5. "The Wanton Song"

I just had to include this because the guitar opening is so cool. I don't know what this song is about, but does anyone really know what any Led Zep song is about? Mysticism? Levees? Misty Mountain Hops? "Bustles in your hedgerow not to be alarmed about? It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Acid?

4. "Anthony's Song (Movin' Out)" by Billy Joel

Yeah I know this songs sucks, but I kind of liked it when I was growing up. I also liked Cotton Candy and Salt Water taffy. And so did my dentist. Paid for his Mercedes.

3. "The Authority Song" by John Mellencamp

"I fight authority/Authority always wins." Who hasn't felt that way? This song seems like a blatant copy of the Clash song - "I Fought the Law (and the Law Won)" but who's to judge. And that song didn't have the word Song in it.

2. "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney

John Lennon once said that Paul McCartney wrote songs "for grannies to dig" and this bubble gum pop would be an example of that. It's a catchy tune but the lyrics are lame and so naively happy it makes me sad. And this could be a song you sing to a 3-year-old to get them to fall asleep. Anyway, I still like it. So I'm a hypocrite.

You've probably never heard of this because it's really just a song written by a friend of mine. His musical career was sidetracked when he decided to become a doctor. I guess he never knew about Dr. John. This song has been recorded (but never published), but I wanted to give him a blatant plug. Great opening acoustic guitar lick. It's good stuff.
