Westminster Dog Show Doesn't Want Viewers Reminded Of Shelter Dogs

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has dropped longtime sponsor Pedigree after the latter declined to modify its ads encouraging people to adopt dogs--including *gasp* mixed breeds--from shelters and rescues.

Pedigree spokesperson Melissa Martellotti: “[Westminster] shared with us, when we parted ways, that they felt that our advertising was focused too much on the cause of adoption and that wasn’t really a shared vision,” she said. The kennel club, she said, is “focused on the purebred mission,” including the adoption of pure breeds as opposed to mixed breeds.

Show me an ad with a dog with a smile; don’t try to shame me.

3-4 million healthy dogs and cats are euthanized in U.S. shelters every year, simply because there is not enough room to house them all. Mixed breeds are thoroughly awesome and tend to be healthier than purebreds, but if you really have a hankering for a German Shepherd or a Yorkie, that can be arranged: about 25% of dogs in shelters are purebreds.
