Ticket scalping is not new, and for the last couple of decades or so; private citizens, online ticket sellers, andsometimes even the event venue or organization, sell tickets at a much higher price than their face value. We all hate exorbitant ticket prices and ticket scalpers but still they are active and brilliantly make holes in our pockets. If we want to drag ticket scalpers down and stop them, first we need to understand the factors that make them so successful.

Ticket scalping is not new, and for the last couple of decades or so; private citizens, online ticket sellers, andsometimes even the event venue or organization, sell tickets at a much higher price than their face value. We all hate exorbitant ticket prices and ticket scalpers but still they are active and brilliantly make holes in our pockets. If we want to drag ticket scalpers down and stop them, first we need to understand the factors that make them so successful. Some of the most important factors that help this industry to grow are:
1. Rules about ticket scalping differ from state to state, and there is no federal law that prohibits the practice.
2. Only 16 out of 50 states have a law that makes scalping illegal.
3. Seven states — Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania — require a special license to resell tickets.
4. Four states — North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio and Virginia — leave the issue up to local municipalities.
5. Scalping is a victimless crime; where both sellers and buyers are ready for the transaction. And that’s why; the police department usually ignores these activities.
6. Reselling a ticket is banned in raceways and the NFL but for other events such as concerts or performances, ticket scalping is not illegal, though reselling ticket is not allowed in the venue, but anyone can resell a ticket online. And when it available online, it is very tough to apply any rules, because the websites that resell tickets are not only tax-paying companies but also have a huge support of diehard fans that are willing to fork over extra to see their favorite artist performing.
All these factors are equally responsible for growth of secondary ticketing industry but the most important factor is our desire. We, the fans support these secondary ticketing companies by visiting their website every time the official website for the event sells out.
Scalpers and secondary ticketing companies are taking a risk when they buy large quantities of tickets and there is always a chance of failing to resell and losing money. If we start boycotting these companies and individuals, they will stop. It might take some time, we might miss some of our favorite artist’s performances but gradually we will have a scalping free ticketing industry
