If this was the kind of publicity PETA concentrated on (augmented, of course, with education and information campaigns about the tons of benefits of a plant-based diet) then I’d bet that many, many more people would hear their message and take it seriously. Instead, like so many extremist groups that people might otherwise think of as benign or even useful, PETA is a laughingstock—seen as a group of freaks that no normal, sane person wants anything to do with. The NRA and its former mission as an education-oriented organization comes to mind as well. Why do such groups insist on undermining their message and goals so completely? I guess they really are insane.
