Slice of LMU: Christmas Tree Lighting.
As depicted in the video, the Christmas Tree Ceremony held on the Loyola Marymount campus is an annual event where students and families come together one chilly night and drink hot chocolate while they wait for the Christmas tree to light up. The air is filled with laughter, music, and excitement as students are emerging from their solitude of studying of finals and all is well. All this can be seen through the video that Loyola Marymount has provided; however, they seem to leave one crucial part of the whole night: a group of 40 or more students fell straight to the ground when the countdown hit one and the lights went on.
A YouTube challenges the way the institution handled the event through their video and their lack of representation of the event.
These students brought the awareness that even though it is Finals week or a Christmas Tree Lighting event, we cannot forget all the real struggle that is happening right outside the campus and our doors. Amidst the fun and the laughter, these group of students brought back the real world into the forefront for the rest of the student body. In a world where people have become more focused on their phones than the outside world, we need to bring back the importance of being aware of the community around you and what you can do to make people listen.
