On one swing of the bat from Shane Victorino, a touch-and-go game for the Red Sox — one that appeared ready to go Detroit's way and force a Game 7 — swung back and propelled the home team into its first World Series in six years.
Until the seventh, the tension was nearly unbearable for Sox fans.
But on an 0-2 pitch, Victorino smacked this breaking ball into the seats up over the Green Monster.
Suddenly, a one-run deficit had turned into an ultimately insurmountable lead.
From there on, the Boston bullpen took over, Victorino having done the heavy lifting.
Torii Hunter was, clearly, not impressed.
The Tigers had their chances to extend their lead earlier in the game, but miscues like Prince Fielder's unfortunate rundown in the top of the sixth did them no favors.
They also got a lucky at times, like when Dustin Pedroia missed a three-run home run by inches. (Watch closely as the shadow creeps by.)
In the end, though, the Tigers' misfortune in this six-game series came down to two Boston swings: Victorino's pennant-winning slam and this David Ortiz game-tying slam in Game 2.
And as usual, it was Koji Uehara's splitter that slammed the door for Boston tonight and ended Detroit's season.
And now the World Series comes to Fenway Park on Wednesday night when the Cardinals roll into town. More memorable moments surely await.
