22 Hollywood Stars Snubbed By The Tonys

A few years ago it seemed Tony couldn't get enough of the TV and film actors who headed to the stage. This year, not so much.

Despite nearly two dozen stars on Broadway, all but three – Neil Patrick Harris, Bryan Cranston and Chris O'Dowd – were snubbed when the nominations were announced. Ranked from least offensive to most offensive oversights.

22. Ethan Hawke in Macbeth

It's Ethan Hawke. It's Shakespeare. But it was a pretty universally panned performance.

21. Mary Louise Parker in Snow Geese

Despite a history on stage, consensus was that Parker was not a good fit for her most recent performance.

20–19. Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig in Betrayal

Though they are husband and wife in real life, Weisz and Craig will not be awarded for playing husband and wife on stage in this production that ended its limited run in January.

18–17. Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming in Cabaret

Many have said Williams can't compare to Natasha Richardson, who originated the role of Sally Bowles in the 1998 version of this revival, so it's not a total surprise she's not nominated. On the other hand, the Tony committee deemed Cumming ineligible for once again stepping into the emcee's shoes, a role he won for in 1998. Life is not a cabaret, old chum.

16. Leighton Meester in Of Mice and Men

Dorota would not approve, even though Miss Blair was overshadowed by the casting of co-stars Chris O'Dowd and James Franco in this production.

15. Orlando Bloom in Romeo and Juliet

This revival was pretty universally panned, but Bloom found a genuine earnestness in Romeo that has been forgotten.

14. Zachary Levi in First Date

Levi was charming and effortless as a guy going through the trials and tribulations of a first date in this little musical that could, but Tony didn't want a second date.

13. Billy Crudup in No Man's Land and Waiting For Godot

Like Sirs Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, Crudup was snubbed for his performance in two plays.

12. Debra Messing in Outside Mullingar

Messing was well-reviewed for her Broadway debut, and the production got nominated for best play. Is it too soon to reference Smash?

11. James Franco in Of Mice and Men

Speaking of Franco... Though he's officially added Broadway star to his varied resume, most reactions seem to congratulate him on a job well done rather than a standout performance.

10. Zach Braff in Bullets Over Broadway

Braff did a great Woody Allen in the musical version of Allen's movie, though his performance was overshone by other heavyweights this season.

9–6. Tracy Letts, Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, and Marisa Tomei

In case you were wondering, that's the entire starry cast of Realistic Joneses, who each excelled at the quirky suburban characters they portrayed in this play.

5. Denzel Washington in A Raisin in the Sun

Washington's 2010 Tony (for Fences) won't be joined by another this year.

The sirs stared in two plays this season – Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land — and not a Tony nomination between them.

2. Zachary Quinto in The Glass Menagerie

Quinto (right, with Cherry Jones) was the only member of Menagerie's four-person cast to not get nominated, despite his nuanced performance in the heartbreaking play. FOR SHAME.

1. Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple of Inishmaan

Seriously, what does Daniel Radcliffe have to do to prove he's got the post-Potter acting chops to garner a Tony nomination? He's gotten naked (Equus), sang and danced (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), and mastered comedy... and still no love from Tony.
