Hadiyah Pendleton's slaying is the sad tragedy of what is happening in the streets of Chicago and in major metropolitan areas around the United States. She performed during President Barack Obama's inaugural events as a child enjoying her teenage years and on Tuesday her joy was stripped from her in only seconds as her friends looked on.
The perpetrator of this murder is unlike the psychopathic killer who took the lives of the children in Newtown, CT, at Aurora CO, Columbine and Virginia Tech. What we have here is a sad truth that has been ignored for some time. No parent should have to experience what the father, Nathaniel Pendleton's family, is going through on this day.
President Obama, Senator Dick Durbin and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have all stepped forward to offer words of encouragement and possible solutions, but unfortunately many feel the attention and action needed is severely lacking and words are never adequate during times like these.
Finding the perpetrator of this crime would offer the needed temporary solace for Pendleton's family, but it can never get at the root of the problem and nor can it bring back an aspiring beautiful daughter and sister.
Background checks more than likely would not have prevented this crime. There needs to be an all out war on the crime of this sort. If our children can't be safe coming home from King College Prep High every parent in America should be alarmed and outraged. The victims of these horrendous murders are crying out from their graves for action now!
