Making The Involvement Fair Work For You

The Emmanuel College Fall Involvement Fair for student groups and other involvement opportunities is Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 12:00pm-2:00pm. You will be competing for the attention of hundreds of students, both first-years and upperclassmen. How will you stand out? A few tips are below.

Invite People to Come See You!

No one needs a formal invitation to come to the Involvement Fair; it, along with the Welcome Bash and part-time job fair, are open to all. But so many of us work better when we know someone will be waiting for us when we arrive. In the course files on the ECLearn site, you may have some email addresses waiting for you. Use them. Let those prospective students know that you see them and want them involved.

Seek to Connect

We've all tried to avoid contact with the salesperson who we can tell wants to approach us. Don't be that person! Instead, engage people who approach your table with real conversation. Ask their name. Ask what they're majoring in or what drew them over. People respond to real conversations, so give them that!

Show Them What It Would Look Like

Does your group have costumes as a part of your operations? How about uniforms? Maybe something you make, create, or share? Bring that with you. When someone asks "so what do you do?", it's far easier to paint a picture in their mind when those objects are right next to you.

Let Them *Do* Something!

If you make something, let people make it. If you have questions you want input on, let them answer. Don't just talk at them, let them get involved from the beginning. If they do something with you once and like it, they'll come back.

A plain table with a sign-up sheet inspires no one. Make signs, decorate, have handouts or gifts! When we recognize groups, we do so because they are providing something unique to the campus committee. Think of your involvement fair table display as a visual representation of that difference.
