Amy Schumer Tackled The Bill Cosby Allegations With A Perfect And Hilarious Sketch

"We deserve to dance like no one's watching. And watch like no one's raping," she tells the jury in an Inside Amy Schumer sketch.

On the May 26 episode of Inside Amy Schumer, Amy Schumer addressed the rape allegations against comedian Bill Cosby by staging a trial in which she played Cosby's lawyer.

In October 2014, comedian Hannibal Buress joked about the beloved actor and comedian being a rapist during a stand-up set, which prompted Cosby's alleged victims to come forward with their experiences being taken advantage of by Cosby.

"Hannibal, the comedian who's my good friend, was the one who kind of brought it to light. And he was just doing a set and then it became a story," Schumer said during a panel after an April screening of Inside Amy Schumer at the Tribeca Film Festival. "It was, I guess, a slow news day. And he called me right after and he was like, 'Ugh.' And I was like, 'Oh my god. It's gonna go away so fast. Don't even worry about it.' He called me a month later and he was like, 'Yeah, it didn't go away like we thought it would.'"

The sketch, written by Inside Amy Schumer's head writer and executive producer Jessi Klein, opens with the prosecutor finishing up her closing arguments.

Then it's Schumer's turn to defend Cosby. She opens her argument by playing some music and dancing to make the jury "feel happy."

And uses a lot of air quotes to make sure the jury knows this is all "alleged."

"We would get in real heated debates in the writers' room," Schumer said at the Tribeca Film Festival panel of the sketch. "No one was like, 'I don't think [Cosby] did it.' It was none of that … But it was just like very different views."

Schumer also touches on how the women's claims are "repetitive" because they have similar stories of Cosby allegedly drugging them and assaulting or raping them while they were unconscious.

She says listening to all the stories made the jury feel "blah," but listening to a clip from The Cosby Show made them laugh.

She really tries to drive home the argument that a man, who many considered to be a father figure for decades, could never do something this terrible.

"Let's break this down logically," Schumer argues. "I am a good person. I like this good show. Like, last time I checked, good plus good did not equal guilty."

And then she tries to say Cosby and his character Cliff Huxtable are the same person.

She seals the deal with some pudding pops.

And gives everyone a "Cosby sweater" to stay warm.

The sketch went through a lot of changes, Schumer noted at the Tribeca panel. "I had an idea to do a scene where there was somewhat of a support group and it was all girls who wouldn't say what happened, but they were all wearing Cosby sweaters," she said. "We were like, 'We want to address this. We don't want it to go away without us getting to comment on it.' And I think we probably talked about this scene more than any other thing we've ever done."

Executive producer Dan Powell said at the Tribeca panel that they shot the Cosby courtroom scene last because of how the story, and thusly the sketch, evolved. "When we first started talking about it, it was kind of early in that story, and then through the 13 weeks that we were writing, obviously the story kept evolving and things kept coming out… And so, we were sort of like, 'OK, we're gonna shoot this one last because it's still going to be a possibility that things are going to change and we're going to have to change the script.'"

In closing, Schumer's defense attorney character says that convicting Cosby could ruin The Cosby Show for fans.

"Let's remind ourselves what's at stake here: If convicted, the next time you put on a rerun of The Cosby Show, you may wince a little, might feel a little pain. And none of us deserve that. We don't deserve to feel that pain. We deserve to dance like no one's watching. And watch like no one's raping."

Then, Cosby sends chocolate cake to the courtroom for the jury. And that seemingly wins all their votes.

He also sends Schumer a cocktail for defending him. Which she promptly throws out.
