What It's Really Like To Be An Astronaut

You've got your physics degree, learnt Russian and made it through the selection process. Now what?

    Congratulations! You're an astronaut.

Before you get to go anywhere, you have to practice doing spacewalks in a 6.2 million gallon pool.

And spend six days in an underground cave isolated from the outside world.

But that doesn't mean you can't have fun.

When you finally get to space, you call this place home.

But only for up to six months at a time, because microgravity makes your bones and muscles deteriorate.

    Exercising upside down is normal.

And you have to do at least two hours a day.

When you first arrive in space, you might be feeling a little nauseous.

Whatever you do, don't forget to take anti-nausea drugs before you put on your spacesuit.

Chances are, you develop blurred vision during your six months in space.

You get exposed to more solar radiation because Earth's magnetic field offers less protection up there.

Although it's less risky than spending the same amount of time going to Mars.

When you shut your eyes, you see cosmic rays that look like stars on the backs of your eyelids.

After floating around for half a year...

...it'll take you a while to get used to gravity again.

But there are some upsides to being an astronaut.

The view from the Cupola is pretty breathtaking.

Nobody else sees our planet quite like this.

    Or this.

Nobody else's holiday photos will compare.

Since 2008 they even have Wi-Fi.

And I supposed the work is pretty fulfilling too.

Who am I kidding, sign me up.
