While wandering around with your nose in a map might make it obvious that you're a tourist, it's pretty harmless. These five things, however, carry some negative repercussions. Don't make these mistakes and you'll have a carefree trip!

1. Forgetting to get a regional train ticket stamped

Italy has an impressive rail system that is guaranteed to get you wherever you need to go - just make sure to check if you're taking a regional train. These slower trains connect cities in the same region (hence the name) and a ticket is valid for a number of weeks. For this reason, you need to stamp your ticket at the kiosks right before the platform to prove to the ticket-checking person that you're not just re-using the same ticket. It might not seem like a big deal, but you could be slapped with a 50 euro fine if you're caught. And in case you weren't aware of the dreadful conversion rate right now between dollars and Euros, that'll cost you about $70.

2. Trying to enter a church dressed like a prostitute

Okay, so I'm sure you don't plan on walking around Italy in a mini skirt and Pretty Woman-esque boots. However, your regular ol' shorts and tank top are going to come across that way to the staff of cathedrals and churches. God doesn't like shoulders, and too much leg makes Jesus uncomfortable. If you're not properly attired, chances are you'll be turned away at the door. Save yourself a lot of time and a little embarrassment by arriving in "respectable" clothing.

3. Trying to take photos in museums that clearly say no photos!

This one's always a tough pill to swallow, especially if you're an art history buff, or you're on a once in a lifetime visit to somewhere magnificent, like the Sistine Chapel. Unfortunately, it's better to just abide by the rules and refrain from taking photos. Not only can the flash damage the artwork (this always seems like a lame reason, but it's true!), but you run the risk of having your camera ripped from your hands by an angry guard who will proceed to delete all of your photos. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience here.

4. Assuming that everyone speaks English

Most people in Italy do speak at least a little English, but that doesn't mean they appreciate hordes of tourists greeting them with "Hello" and bombarding them with questions about directions, restaurants, and sights. Even if you only learn to say hi, please, and thank you in Italian, it will really go a long way with the locals. Make the effort to start the conversation in their language, and they'll be more willing to help you out in yours.

5. Trying to over plan your time

Italy isn't known for la dolce vita for nothing! While it is tempting to pack your schedule full of everything while you're in Italy, you'll only end up exhausted and burnt out. To really appreciate and enjoy Italy, learn to go with the flow and relax a little! Chances are you're going to happen upon some quaint little cafe on your way to a museum. Live like an Italian; pop in and take a moment to unwind! And if you really insist on micromanaging every second of your trip, schedule in a few hours in the afternoon to enjoy a bottle of wine (or 8) and people watch in a piazza. You'll be glad you did!
