Microwaving a sponge DOES NOT kill the mildew and germs in a used sponge. What works is leaving in direct sunlight for a day or so exposed to UV light. This is what kills the mildew and germs. I put mine between the window and the screen and just leave it there for a few days and the mildew and smells completely disappear.
