Controversial PSA Campaign Targets Obese Children

Georgia has the second highest childhood obesity rate in United States. But do these commercials cross the line from concerned to damaging or just tell it like it is?

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

I think these ads are spot on. Being fat is miserable as a child, I was a fat kid and have not been able to shed insecurities about myself. Yes, children shouldn’t be judged but there are definite health risks associated with childhood obesity. These should be made nation wide so everyone can see them

The second video is horrific, the blame of a young girl being bullied by mean, insulting kids is placed on her. Its atrocious. Yes we have an obesity problem, but if you want to blame anyone, blame the parents. They are ones buying cheap processed foods and shoving it down their throats.

How the hell is this controversial, they should’ve done this sooner! It’s not only tackling one of the main problems that makes many children targets of their peers, but it also points out the health problems. It’s a much needed reality check from one of the main problems that causes the obesity to get out of hand in the first place, sitting in front of the T.V. I hope that this is a major national campaign and I would personally be quite happy to see this commercial showing up on T.V. on any given night. It will hopefully give the message to people who need it the most to start changing their lives sooner rather than later. As much as previous sweet and fun attempts have been tried, like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, this I can see having more of an impact with the cold hard truth; however, these commercials from those two can give a main idea to what big kids can do to help themselves out.

I don’t see the controversy either like many of you have already stated it’s really just about honesty . Seriously kids pick on each other for all sorts of reasons, that shouldn’t be the issue. I’ve always been thin but I was bullied in school for being short, having frizzy hair, a big nose, etc. and you don’t see any commercials about that. The thing is parents can help their children be healthy and stay active, it’s a controllable problem that they ignore way too often. Sure being able to fit in can be important but no child should have obesity related health problems at such a young age.

These kids wouldn’t be fat if they just ate more pizza and other vegetables.

Couz it didn’t suck enough already, been a fat kid. Now you can think it’s a disease too! And don’t worry, even if you weren’t fat, kids would find something else to pick on you about. That’s what they fucking DO!

I don’t see the problem here. The truth shouldn’t have to be sugar coated (unintentional pun).

    • neptuny a year ago

Just get rid of the “Being fat takes the fun out of being a kid.” Keep the “Stop sugarcoating it, Georgia” because it’s catchy and the campaign is fine IMO.

I don’t see how this is all that bad. I mean people shouldn’t be made fun of for being fat… but when you’ve got children, it’s probably best to make sure they grow up eating as healthy as you can afford. A big problem I know is that it’s hard to feed kids healthy when you don’t have a lot of money. Processes junk is a lot cheaper than natural stuff. Then there’s the time factor. Families that work hard often don’t have time to cook a real meal. Fast food and other quick options become the norm. I know because when I was lucky enough to be able to leave for college, I lost 20lb my first year there just because I had access to healthier food and had to walk everywhere. But anyway… People should be aware that childhood obesity is a problem. I have nothing against being fat, but it’s easier to be healthy when you’re a little less than overweight.

    • melanyw a year ago

I think that being made fun of is the least of the obese population’s problems. People always want to think that fat people just eat because they want to. Who would wake up and WANT to be fat? No one. There are numerous issues surrounding obesity which include psychological and self-esteem issues. Love yourself inside and when you do you will realize that being HEALTHY is more important than what people say about you. If a person loves themselves than being healthy will be the number #1 priority. We need to lift these children up and show them that THEY are worth it, THEY deserve to be healthy. Fuck what other people think, don’t lose weight because of that, lose weight because YOU’RE worth it.

    • John Doe a year ago

Wow. I expected tons of users saying how big is in and how they’re real women (or some bullshit to that effect) but it’s great to see that many users can see a problem with weight in America. Much of it is not even the children’s fault, but the parent’s. If this is too harsh for certain viewers, it’s because it probably is too truthful.

    • ilikeoatmeal a year ago

I hardly think anyone will care about hurt feelings when their obese child is 6 feet under by the age of 30.

    • Kex a year ago

This is what you get for serving processed fast food instead of real food in schools.

    • Jed Oliver a year ago

I fail to see anything damaging about any of these commercials. If anything they don’t go too far enough. Instead of just, “Hey Mom, your kid is fat’ they should take another 5, 10 seconds and tell mom one easy thing they can do to make a change in their kid’s life - cut out soda, serve smaller portions, provide healthier meals, turn off the video games and make them play outside for an hour. Something. Don’t just stop at acknowledging there’s a real problem with real consequences - show them an EASY solution. Just one. Just something to show they care.

    • pandiB a year ago

These are heart-wrenching, but it seems like their message is more “don’t be fat because then other people won’t like you” and I’d rather it was “be a healthy weight because it’s better for you”. The obesity epidemic needs to be addressed, but not via bullying.

I don’t understand the issue at all. As a society, our diets are relics, providing a sufficient number of calories for manual labor. While our work has changed significantly over the last century, our diets have not, leaving us fat and out of shape. There needs to be a cultural change in our diets.

    • edgerrton a year ago

I don’t think this is crossing a line at all, these PSAs pretty much say exactly what needs to be said without getting offensive about it, they are super effective and should be used throughout America

    • MrSwearword a year ago

Not meaning to be combative, but I see no controversial element in any of the PSA’s. At least to ME it’s more “tell it like it is” as opposed to being insensitive.
