• Response to Ford Factory Fail:

And you thought that the only benefit to these things was no health insurance or retirement costs. But we will die, not at the hands of terminators, but nanobots!

  • Scriball rules. I think I almost beat it using the bouncy ball that you unlock by beating it the first time. Thanks for the timewaster Buzzfeed, I mean Scott! I also really liked Auditorium, and had to waste hours beating it too.

  • map 2.
note also that there are few African Americans in the “Racist Belt.”  So either:
    i) fear arises from ignorance,
ii) or black folks don't want to live in crackerjack places.  Interesting that “racism”-as in the belt- would not map to slavery (but is confined to the south). Perhaps the promulgation of racist attitudes helped build a southern political coalition to unite rich plantation owners with ignorant backwooods honkies. Maybe they never felt the need to reconcile given the lack of slaveowning past or contemporary black neighbors.

  • There does seem to be a pattern where cotton producing areas in 1860 seem to have voted Democratic in 2008. a few ideas here:
    1) African American turnout is related to a legacy population in these areas, resulting in the blue counties. 2) White guilt, as momma calls it 3) Cotton producing areas were related to settlement density, which grew over time to create urban density, which is highly correlated with blue county votes. I think this one is the most likely. Only 2) above is related to racism, and is actually inverted racism.  So, no, probably has nothing to do with the racist belt. Unless you wish to further postulate that the racist belt is due to lack of familiarity with African Americans, while this shows comfort with African Americans. But still, I'm going with urban density. Or…not.
Map 1, Kerry v. Bush shows that
    a) Urban density probably isn't the determining factor (note esp. MS along the Mississipi R.)
    b) Probably not related directly to racial preference (Because its Bush v. Kerry) Map 2 shows that its likely due to African American population density. Notably, comparison with map 1 shows that this is not about race, but about African American preference for Democratic candidates. Maybe it is merely a legacy of African American populations in former cotton growing areas. 1) wins!!!

Nice beer analogy from the economist.
Or maybe not an economist. Except that to be fitting the 10th (rich) man would own the bar.
