BATTLE OF THE SPIDEYS: SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004) Vs. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (2014)

The Summer movie season kicks off this weekend with the release of "The Amazing Spider- Man 2." If this newest adventure of everyone's 'friendly neighborhood Spider-Man' feels like déja vu, it's because it's only been ten years since the last "Spider-Man 2." Which web crawler sequel is best?

ROUND 1: PETER PARKER

2004: Tobey Maguire was 29 when he portrayed college student Peter Parker in the second movie. 2004's Peter Parker sure was a good crier. Perhaps Tobey knew this could be the last high profile role of his career... unless you count 2013 when he was awesome-ish on "The Great Gatsby."

2014: Andrew Garfield is a 30-year-old playing a high school kid. Yeah, Andrew Garfield is 30! He gets bonus points for still being able to get the part of a high school student and for dating Emma Stone in real life. Don't cry Andrew, you win this round!

ROUND 2: THE LOVE INTEREST

2004: Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane Watson back then. Technically, the upside down kiss above happened in the first movie, but we were still hot and bothered two years later when the sequel came out. It's still the most iconic Spider-Man image to this day.

2014: Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy and clearly she really got so into the character, she started dating Andrew Garfield. We all thought Kirsten Dunst was cute at the time, but it can't compare with the level of obsession Emma Stone awakens.

WINNER: 2014.

ROUND 3: THE VILLAIN

2004: Alfred Molina was Dr. Octopus 10 years ago. Molina is not a huge star but in the gallery of roughest Spider-Man nemeses, Doc Oc is tops. He's the Lex Luthor of the Spider-Man world. (Comic books nerds, feel free to object in the comments... but we stand by the comparison!)

2014: Jamie Foxx plays Electro in the new version... definitely way more star power than Molina, but Jamie looks a little ridiculous in that makeup. And let's face it, nobody is that menacing when you can defeat them with a glass of water

WINNER: 2004

ROUND 4: HARRY OSBORN

2004: It was a simpler time in the world; James Franco was just an actor, not the never-ending lost soul that's also a soap star, student, teacher, director, writer, producer, photographer, composer, editor, careless with his camera phone, Anne Hathaway's co-host, Lilo lover/denier, etc. Looking at the silly gifs people have generated from his portrayal as Harry Osborn, you can see there was the promise of genius/crazy person from the very beginning!

2014: The new Harry is Dane DeHaan, and he's on his way to super stardom according to many critics. If Dane ever becomes as famous as Franco, we just hope he is a little more focused and stays away from Lindsay Lohan, underage girls and the Academy Awards.

WINNER: 2014... we just can't find any situation in which Franco wins anything right now.

ROUND 5: THE DIRECTOR

2004: Sam Raimi, best known for the "Evil Dead" movies. Enough said! How can you argue with any guy that would direct a scene where a character attached a chainsaw to his missing arm?

Then again, he also gave us the Sharon Stone classic he'd probably prefer us to forget, "The Quick and the Dead."

2014: Marc Webb directed the new movie, and how would you not think of him for directing a big action blockbuster? After seeing that awesome dance number in his best known movie, "(500) Days of Summer," we still have no idea how he got the Spider-man gig!

WINNER: 2004.

It's adorable that a guy with the last name Webb is directing movies about spiders, but Raimi has the most bad-ass resume and he wears a suit to work every day!

FINAL RESULTS:

Tallying the final numbers, the new movie beats the 2004 sequel!

Sony needs to make a Spider-Man movie every two years, or the film rights will revert back to Disney, so these movies will keep on coming fast! I'm looking forward to Sony making "The Spectacular Spider-Man 2" in 2024, and "The Fetching World of Spider-Man 2" in 2034. Yeah, we think by 2034, "Fetch" might finally happen. It will be the 30-year anniversary of "Mean Girls" after all.
