In was a 5 year old child with ADHD in 1969 running around out of control and driving my Mama crazy. She turned on Mr Rogers and I sat my ass down and watched that sweet man tell me that he liked me just the way I am. My Mama marveled at my sudden calm and noticed a tear in my eye. She asked me why and I could only shrug. Years later I watched my own son watched Mr. Rogers. He too had ADHD. He suddenly calmed while Mr. Rogers sang It’s a Wonderful day in the Neighborhood.” I marveled at his sudden calm, too. No tears this time, but a look of awe on my son’s face told me that he saw what I saw when I was 5. He saw the true face of goodness. My son’s children don’t have Mr. Rogers now. That saddens me. What a lovely fellow.

  It’s amazing to me that he was able to affect the lives of so many people over several generations! I was watching his show for the latter half of the 80s, into the 90s. His show was wonderful and I was saddened by his death. You should buy some Mr. Rogers dvds for your grandchildren!

  I also had ADHD, but it wasn’t diagnosed until much later- around high school. I would also stop destroying everything in sight and sit down and listen to him tell me he loved me the way I was, and I remember him giving me hope that maybe someday, someone else would too.
