1. Pizza at Picture House Social

Despite being open less than a year, Picture House Social has already earned the crown of best pizza in Sheffield. Perfectly crisp bases and innovative toppings are aided by the fact their San Marzano tomatoes and 00 flour are imported directly from Italy, whilst their toppings are seasonal and sourced locally.

2. Breakfast at Forge Bakehouse

After an upsizing of premises after the popularity of their original bakery, Forge Bakehouse have recently opened a café within their new location. Despite its infancy it's already become a favourite breakfast spot because of such dishes as their Huevos Rancheros baked eggs and french toast. Also, any bread they don't sell from their bakery goes to feed the pigs at the local city farm. How ace is that?

3. Burger and Fries from the Twisted Burger Co.

The Twisted Burger Co. is served at both The Harley (until 4am!) and The Riverside, specialising in slightly bonkers, and rather massive, burgers as well as messy, delicious fries, shakes and sides. Their menu is music-themed and ever changing.

Aside from making some seriously delicious coffee in their comfy surroundings with a weekly guest blend from the UK's best roasters, Steam Yard also offer some excellent food too. Their lunch menu features salt beef bagels, pastrami sandwiches and a gooey three cheese toastie with chutney but their donuts (provided by Depot Bakery) and fronuts (ice-cream filled donuts) are some of the best in the city.

Few places manage to do breakfast, brunch, lunch and evening meals (once a week – on a Friday) as well as one another but this New Zealand eatery somehow manages it. Excellent coffee, craft beer, daily specials and a Kiwi-themed menu (including their greatly adored mince on toast) all make Tamper a city favourite. If you like cheese then you should also keep an eye out for their "homage to fromage" evenings.

If you're looking for tasty Mexican food with a twist then Shy Boy Cantina (who run the kitchen in the Great Gatsby) is for you. Their tacos are killer and include adventurous fillings, such as: Fried chicken with daikon pickle and Korean hot sauce; Baja fish and slaw; and Aubergine, peanut and coriander aioli.

7. Sandwiches from Bragazzis

Bragazzis is a traditional Italian café that, as well as serving great coffee, also has a deli, selling: antipasti, fresh cheeses, olives, oils and more. Many of these deli ingredients go into making their sandwiches, which have become almost legendary in Sheffield.

8. Monthly Brunch at Upshot Espresso

The guys at Upshot make some damn fine coffee and whilst their day-to-day breakfast – including avocado on toast and thick cut bacon on a brioche bun – is already a hit, their monthly brunch is a bit special. They put on a special guest coffee available as a "tasting flight" where the same single origin bean is served three ways: Espresso, flat white and aeropress. As for grub, think breakfast burger, french toast and even gin cured salmon.

9. Chippy Tea from Two Steps

It's rare to turn up to Two Steps and not find a fair-sized queue – and not without good reason too, they've been making fish & chips since 1895 so they know what they're doing. Their very cheap mini fish & chips (pictured) is a big hit amongst the local students. Oh, and they do mushy pea fritters too, which are amazing.

10. A taste of the American East Coast from Anchorage

So popular is this Turkish restaurant that they opened a second location...on the same road. Despite being only yards away both are always full, mainly because of their kebabs, which are cooked in front of you on hot charcoals.

The Grind freshly prepare all their locally-sourced food on the premises, including a ever-changing variety of salads (at least six a day) and a whole other heap of goodness. Homemade by Thelma's

The breakfast and lunch at Homemade by Thelma's is already amazing but their foray into evening dining has become a huge hit too. Every Friday is bistro night. It's BYOB, the menu changes every three or four weeks, veggie, vegan and gluten free options. Expect dishes like: Char siu pork with chilli greens, noodles and pickled cucumber; Middle eastern fishcakes in a spicy harrisa and tomato sauce with bulgar wheat salad. Booking essential.

The Fat Cat is real back to basics cooking. No ostentatiousness, just simple, home cooked, old school pub grub. Superb for veggies and vegans, nothing on the menu is more than £5 and their ploughman's lunch is the perfect accompaniment to the great range of cask ales they have, much of which is brewed just yards away at the Kelham Island Brewery.
