    Obama Has Done Nothing For LGBT

    I have heard more and more people say that Obama has done nothing and will do nothing for the LGBT community. For the sake of argument here are a few things President Obama has actually done for the LGBT Community.

    2009:

    June 17th- Ordered the Federal Government to extend key benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

    June 29th- Hosted the first-ever White House LGBT Pride Reception.

    August 12th- Awarded the highest civilian honor, The Medal of Freedom, to Billie Jean King and Harvey Milk.

    October 21st- Created a National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders.

    October 28th-Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention act into law.

    2010:

    January 1st- Banned discrimination in federal workplaces based on gender identity.

    January 4th- Lifted the ban that prohibited people with HIV/AIDS from entering the United States.

    April 15th- Ensured hospital visitation and medical decision making rights for gay and lesbian patients.

    June 9th- Allowed transgender American’s to receive true gender passports without surgery.

    June 22nd- Clarified the Family and Medical Leave Act to ensure family leave for LGBT

    employees.

    June 22nd- Released America’s first comprehensive plan to prevent and end homelessness, which includes homeless LGBT youth.

    October 1st- Awarded a Grant to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center to work with LGBT foster youth. (You know because parents would rather their kid live on the street than have a gay child)

    October 21st- Recorded “It Gets Better Video” to support LGBT youth experiencing bullying.

    October 21st- Led an United Nations measure to restore “Sexual Orientation” to the definition of human rights.

    December 22nd- Signed the Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

    2011:

    February 23rd- Declared the Defense Of Marriage Act unconstitutional and announced the administration will no longer defend it in court.

    March 10th- Hosted the first-ever White House Conference of Bullying Prevention in American Schools.

    March 31st- Completed and Institute of Medicine study on LGBT health, the first of it’s kind.

    May 27th-Issued guidance to foster safer working environments for Transgendered federal employees.

    July 19th- Endorsed the Respect for Marriage Act, a legislative effort to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

    August 18th- Clarified the meaning of “family” to include LGBT relationships, helping protect bi-national families threatened by deportation.

    August 19th- Supported Lesbian widow Edith Windsor in her suit against DOMA.

    September 15th- Ended the Social Security Administration’s gender “no match” letters.

    September 20th- Implemented the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”

    September 30th- Permitted Military Chaplains to officiate same-sex marriages where legal.

    October 1st- Addressed he annual Human Rights Campaign dinner for the second time.

    October 13th- Allison Nathan becomes second openly gay appointee to be confirmed to the

    federal bench under Obama’s nomination.

    November 1st- In his presidential proclamation of National Adoption Month, President Obama called for the equal treatment for same-sex adoptive parents.

    December 6th- Created the first ever U.S. Government strategy dedicated to combating human rights abuses against LGBT persons abroad.

    2012:

    January 28th- Announced HUD’s new rule protecting against housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

    February 2nd- Announced White House LGBT Conference Series to address issues affecting LGBT Americans, including health, housing, and safety.

    February 7th- Promoted equal access to quality healthcare by enabling searches for health plans with same-sex partner benefits on healthcare.gov.

    March – Ensured transgender veterans receive respectful care according to their true gender through the Veterans health Administration.

    March 15th- Michael Fitzgerald, fourth openly gay nominee under Obama, is confirmed to he federal bench in California.

    March 16th- Came out against North Carolina’s Amendment 1, which prohibits same-sex marriage in the state.

    May – President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announced their support for same-sex marriage. The only ones to have the balls to do so.
