nreid 2 months agoI was taught to never hit a woman. A very simple lesson that was reinforced by my father never hitting my mother. I have a hard time understanding why woman would stay in a relationship like that but fear is so powerful. It is not the one getting abused fault for staying. We should never tolerate people doing this. We should never turn the other way…. but we do, we always do.

I personally don’t really think these ads do anything particularly beneficial. They’re emotionally powerful, yes, but all I see is “look, this woman is being beaten.” Abuse is about more than just physical harm. It’s largely psychological. Videos like these make it seem like it’s just about the physical damage, which makes it all the more easy to say, “Why not just leave?” The psychological part, which is (relatively) rarely discussed, is the reason why people stay in abusive situations. Abusers are often exceptionally charismatic and nice for a decent (but decreasing) period of time. The general pattern of abuse is that the relationship starts off fine, but then the abuser becomes controlling. The other person (let’s just assume stereotypical male abuser, female victim just for ease of discussion) does something that he sees as a threat to his control, and he snaps and hits her. He then apologizes and acts truly, deeply sorry (and in all honesty, he may well mean it at the time). She forgives him, they carry on, and then it happens again, and again, usually with shorter periods of time in between and more psychological control overall. The thing is, it’s not the physical violence that’s the biggest problem, it’s the psychological part. Yes, the physical part is more dangerous, in that it causes real injuries and can potentially be fatal, but the result of the psychological aspect is feelings of worthlessness, low self esteem, powerlessness, and loss of sense of self (which, ultimately, is a big part of why people stay in that situation, in addition to fear of what the abuser will do to them if they try to leave). It can take an extremely long time for someone to recover from that, far longer than bruises or broken bones, especially if they continue trying to control you even after you leave, which many do. In my opinion, an effective domestic violence PSA would focus on how abuse can happen to ANYONE, how insidious it can be, and how difficult it really is to get out of that situation without help. Otherwise, all a lot of people see is a battered woman who doesn’t have the sense to leave the guy who’s beating her, and how could anyone be so dumb? And that’s the line of thinking we need to combat (well, that and the one the abusers have, obviously).

Abuse is wrong period. Whether its an abuse from a man to a woman, woman to man, man to man, or woman to woman. Whether its physically, mental or emotional its wrong. If someone is abusing you, get out of the relationship as soon as you can and get help. Theres always people who care, no matter where you are or who you are.

To be completely fair, a man who’s being abused by a woman is the least likely of anyone to do anything about it (the same as a man being raped by a woman), because of the perception that it’s not possible, or that it means you’re not a “real man.” Even if it happens in much smaller numbers (which is true for rape but some evidence suggests it’s not true for domestic violence), it’s still a problem, and it’s one far fewer people are aware of. It would be best if ads would demonstrate more clearly that abuse can happen in ANY type of relationship, be it man-on-woman, woman-on-man, man-on-man, or woman-on-woman (the last one having gained some media attention in recent years). Then again, talking about domestic violence in same-sex couples could easily be fuel to the fire for those opposed to same-sex relationships (it shouldn’t be, but you know they’d try to use it that way). That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be talked about, but it does make it more complicated to do so.
