31 Year-Old Handgun Violence Ad Still Relevant Today

It ran in 1981, shortly after John Lennon was murdered.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
31 Year-Old Handgun Violence Ad Still Rele...
copyranter

The ad ran soon after Lennon was shot dead by Mark David Chapman. Chapman shot Lennon in the back with four hollow point bullets from a .38 special.
The handgun death percentages by-country are basically the same today.
This is not the time to discuss this, though.
But this is the time to blame the lack of God in schools and gaming for the Sandy Hook shooting.

Ad created by Advertising Hall of Fame art director Rick Boyko.

People have to start with being kind and interacting with others not like themselves. Everyone seems to prefer narcissism and tribalism instead, that’s the real tragedy.

To think that this “school shooting” is the same as any other is incorrect. Lanza was an adult that slaufhtered inocent children, not a frustrated youth who exacted revenge on his peers

That’s like saying cars kill people. The car isn’t the killer, it’s the drunk operating it. The gun isn’t the killer, it’s the person wielding it.

I don’t understand how people can argue that guns aren’t the problem. If he had not had access to such a weapon there may have been a tragedy still, but would it be to this degree? Probably not. It’s easy to be a coward behind a gun, less so with another weapon.

None of these counties are even close to our size or population, so of course our numbers are higher. Great Britain’s gun laws are some of the strictest, and most regulated. Yet there are still many gun deaths every year. Hmm? This is a poor stab at anti-gun propaganda, and a weak comparison at best at best….

      • Solus 6 months ago

Since you missed it the first time:  The population of the USA in 1981 was approximately 226 million. The population of the other countries listed, combined, were approximately 267 million. While the total handgun deaths were 10,728 in the USA versus 263 in the other countries. Or adjusted for population size the USA had 47 handgun deaths per million while the other countries had .99 per million, combined. As for Great Britain, it’s firearm homicide rate is .04 per 100K population, ours is 2.98 per 100K. Do you really feel like you are making an effective argument against gun control by citing GB?

Listen I’m all for stopping shit like this happening… But, stricter gun laws is NOT the answer. By issuing in a “gun ban” or stricter gun laws, you are only hurting law abiding citizens. You’re taking away their RIGHT as AMERICAN citizens to bear arms. If anything, they need to loosen the gun laws and allow teachers to carry firearms as they do in other countries where this shit does NOT happen. Criminals will always find a way to arm themselves, just like drug dealers will always get illegal drugs and sell them. How are you people not getting this!?

      • Solus 6 months ago

Bombs, chemical, and biological weapons require specialist knowledge to construct and use effectively. And the precursors of those tools of mass killing are heavily regulated and monitored. Guns require no specialist knowledge to use and are widely available to anyone that wants them. Knives too, but it is much harder to kill a large number of people with a knife and the ratio of gun to knife massacres shows that killers have a clear preference for the easier tool. Even if teachers had guns it wouldn’t stop an attacker from being able to take lives. The attacker will likely have a superior weapon to the teacher, the attacker can equip a helmet/vest/etc, and the attacker is the one initiating the incident so they have a superior tactical advantage. A teacher with a gun may or may not be able to take down the attacker, but has little chance of stopping the killing before it starts. The only way to prevent all the deaths would be for the killer to not have access to a sufficient weapon in the first place.

      • oOo 6 months ago

“Law abiding citizens” like this nutcase? The one who used legal, registered weapons that his mom was stockpiling against armageddon? He would have been labeled law abiding the day before the massacre. This wasn’t some drug gang using hot weapons smuggled in, it was an affluent tech nerd in a house full of legal guns, the kind you want to protect.  And are you serious about teachers walking around strapped with guns? You’re a nut. Where does it end? Every person walking around strapped with a gun, ready for a lethal gunfight at all times? Gee, what could go wrong. You’re a nut.

That kind of stat is not put in any context and until it is, it is meaningless to use. You have to ratio it out to the population of each country and then compare it to total deaths, then split both into accidental deaths vs. violent crimes. then you start getting meaning. OH… I almost forgot. How many of those deaths were caused by law enforcement guns? Why can’t people come up with these stats properly? Oh… because the ones doing so are trying to wag the dog or are not qualified to be doing that kind of work.
Once you get the stat correct, then look at how those countries punish criminals compared to the US. I am sure each one of those countries has a pretty strong policy in place to deter violence compared to the US.
Wish this country would stop being sheep, ask questions, and focus on what would make a real difference. Then it wouldn’t matter what the weapon of choice is.
That takes care of criminals. Mentally ill is a different situation to deal with. I will admit, that is going to be a tricky one to do without walking on our rights.

    • MsSkeet 6 months ago

Great ad, but a very sad reminder. I wonder what the stats are today in 2012?

In Switzerland, everyone has a service rifle. The whole country has to serve in the army, and they get to keep their gun. That’s something that 31 year old poster omits.

      • deaddrift 6 months ago

The whole country has to serve in the army.

      • Solus 6 months ago

So you are saying that the US should require everyone who wants a gun to join the military first, or at least take a several month long training class…

      • seans27 6 months ago

He’s saying that when someone wants to commit a crime they have to think about the serious possibility that walking into a bank to rob it, or a mall or school or theater to start shooting, or to break into a home that there is someone inside with a weapon prepared to stop them and PROTECT the masses. People don’t realize that taking guns away from law abiding citizens is taking away their ability to PROTECT themselves and their neighbors from people who will get weapons whether its legal or not.

      • Solus 6 months ago

The point you seem to have missed is that even with all our guns our crime rate isn’t significantly lower, if not higher, than countries that don’t have a lot of guns and gun violence. The value of a gun to protect yourself is muted by the fact that the other guy is more likely to have a gun as well. This escalates the violence, not prevents it. Instead of burglary it becomes armed burglary, and if someone sees you then you might as well kill them because you are screwed either way. The numbers for other countries show this. If the whole point of guns is to protect yourself, but guns are actually making you less safe, then what’s the point of the gun again?

    • sparrowsinfrost 6 months ago

We should prolly be discussing why 20 year old American men are becoming mass murderers, i see alot of apathy and a selfish generation. To think that a video game, a movie, or a gun is responsible for that tragedy is a mistake. Its all of those things, and none of them. Imagine that adam lanza is the monster and american culture is dr Frankenstein. He was a mass murderer of children and used tools that are for one purpose: killing. Period. Thats all. It is a great responsibility that as a country we are given the freedom to own and purchase firearms. I do belive this particular monster would have found a different tool to end the lives of maybe even more children.

      • Benjamin Sapiens 6 months ago

You’re leaving out the fact that it’s a hell of a lot easier to murder dozens of people with a firearm than with a knife, a blunt object, arson, a bomb, or any other kind of weapon.

      • Solus 6 months ago

If guns weren’t available then a mass murderer would need to learn how to make a bomb and source the materials, learn chemistry and source the chemicals, learn biology and source the microbes, or whatever. That takes effort and specialist knowledge. And law enforcement monitors purchases of precursor chemicals and distribution of dangerous microbe strains. So you are saying that young people are so apathetic and selfish, but that we shouldn’t restrict their access to the one tool of mass murder that is widely available and requires no specialist knowledge to use? That is, of course, assuming that your assertion about the youth today was correct. The truth is that such has always been true of youth, even back in whatever prehistoric era you came from. School shootings have been happening since the 1800’s, as I’m sure you remember.

      • seans27 6 months ago

benr11, Have you seen any news from Israel? Doezens of people are killed in instances all the time and the murderer never uses a gun. He can get a makeshift homemade bomb and walk on to a bus and kill 20 people. When someone has decided they are ready to take someone else’s life, whether a gun is legal to own or not is stop going to stop them.

      • Solus 6 months ago

The situation in Israel is completely different than it is here. In the middle east it is relatively easy for a terrorist to get their hands on some military grade explosives, ready to go. Here in America law enforcement would be all over your ass if you stole explosives or started buying the precursor chemicals. And there have been lots of shootings in Israel, if you have been paying attention to the news.

      • Benjamin Sapiens 6 months ago

Bombings in Israel are the product of sophisticated infrastructures which operate as one of several terrorist/war campaigns against Israel by Palestinian militant groups. Building and detonating a bomb is much more difficult than grabbing a gun and opening fire.
