For more than 80 years, College Democrats across the country have been a driving force for positive change, both on campus and in government. Here are ten reasons to make joining College Democrats one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2015!

Former College Democrats include Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Amy Klobuchar, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. Who knows, your chapter might include a future Governor, Senator, or even a President!

8. You’ll be part of a nationwide community of young Democratic leaders.

When you join College Democrats, you’ll become the newest member of a community of thousands of students spread across all 50 states. Our members might disagree on BIG TEN vs. SEC or “you guys” vs. “ya’ll, but we all share a commitment to making our country a better place for young Americans.

We believe that young people deserve to have a say in how our government is run. That’s why every election year, College Democrats everywhere spend countless hours registering students to vote and getting students to the polls. After all, if students had stayed home in 2012, we would be stuck with this guy.

5. You’ll fight to make college more affordable for future students.

Graduating with mountains of student loan debt isn’t fun. That’s why College Democrats and the Democratic Party are working hard to advocate for student loan reform that would lessen the burden for millions of Americans. In 2015, we’re going to keep up the fight to make college more affordable because graduating with student loans shouldn’t feel like this.

4. You’ll lead the way on campus to make America a more fair and equal place.

College Democrats across the country are committed to promoting equality for women, LGBT Americans, and people of color. In the past year, our members worked hard to advocate for marriage equality and prevent politicians from restricting women’s healthcare.

3. After working hard during the week, you’ll get to have #demsafterdark festivities.

After working hard to campaign for Democratic candidates and get students out to vote, we always make time to celebrate. We might not all dance as well as Barack, but you get the idea.

2. You’ll make some pretty cool new friends.

In addition to all your awesome fellow College Democrats, you’ll get to meet plenty of state and national Democratic elected officials. We’re still pretty jealous of everyone who got to hear from Barack AND Hillary at the 2007 College Democrats Convention.

College Democrats were instrumental in getting students to the polls in 2008 and 2012 to elect Barack Obama. In 2016, students will again have the chance to decide the outcome of a presidential election. By joining College Democrats, you’ll get the chance to make history by helping elect the type of leader that will make America a better place.
