England Was Eliminated From The World Cup Final In The Most Heartbreaking Way

I'm not crying, you're crying.

England's Laura Bassett scored an own goal in the final moments of the Women's World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, bringing the match with Japan to an unbelievable and heartbreaking close.

Bassett played for the ball as several Japanese players neared the goal, accidentally knocking it against the top pole and bouncing it in.

The accidental goal means Japan will move on to the finals against the U.S. on Sunday, a rematch of 2011's cup.

It was a devastating loss for the English team, who had been praised for their performance throughout the game.

Fans on Twitter shared their sympathies, as well as their pride in the team.

Well done England ladies football team. You did us proud #youdidusproud#inspiredanation

Just saw the end of the England v.Japan game. Wow. Chin up ladies you lost a match but won a nation.

A shame the way England lost. They were the better team. Well done Lionesses. #FIFAWWC

So the 3rd-seed team was only able to score one goal (a PK) vs the 6th-seed team? #Lionesses & #England should be quite proud. #FWWC

Cheers, ladies.
