What You Need To Know About England's Heroic Women's World Cup Exit

The English have united behind their team, despite their 2-1 loss to Japan.

The weather conditions in the UK were perfect for staying up all night and watching Japan vs England.

GOOD LUCK SLEEPING IN THE OVEN THAT IS YOUR BED BRITAIN

No dramas. Sleep is overrated...

Decisions has officially been made to stay up at watch the #Lionesses. Just to make sure I don't oversleep...

Excitement peaked.

Quite interesting watching the level of twitter interest increase in #ENG game-by-game. At it's absolute peak tonight #Lionesses

And the Lionesses started strong.

Great start from the #Lionesses, here. Including this moment #ENGvJPN (via BBC) #WWC2015

England stuck to the plan and it worked well early on.

Come on #Lionesses You've done so much for the Women's game already! (so great to see @England making the nation proud for once!) ⚽ #ENG

But there was a questionable penalty decision for Japan, spelling disaster for England.

Was it really a penalty? Initial contact occurred outside the box, but if the foul continues inside the box and denies a goalscoring opportunity, it can be given as a penalty.

Japan scored their penalty. But luckily it didn't matter. England were awarded a penalty shortly after.

It was still contentious, but most England fans agreed it was a penalty.

Soft penalty, but a penalty all the same. #Eng v #JPN

Farah Williams buried it.

WHAT A PEN, mate. #Beautiful #Lionesses #ENGvJPN (BBC)

The net is still broken.

The Wembley arch was lit up for England back home.

Come on England, the Wembley arch is lit up for you #Lionesses #ENG

And even rugby players were enjoying the spectacle.

England v Japan - women's football is light years away from mens; there's no diving or feigning injury for a start.

With just over 10 minutes to go, it was getting TENSE.

Could England find a winner?

Getting tense now! England have been massively unlucky so far!! There's a goal coming very soon! #Lionesses

Going into added time, some people were starting to struggle...

But then disaster struck. The cruellest twist of fate...

England crash out of the World Cup to a last minute own goal http://t.co/EdlbAlgxJn #Lionesses

An own goal from Laura Bassett – in the last few minutes of the match.

The reaction was pretty unanimous...

Yup.

A pattern emerged...

Yup.

Sigh...

Yup.

But do you know what? England might have lost, but we're bloody proud of our Lionesses.

Devasted. Absolutely devasted. Can't fault the #Lionesses though. They've done the nation proud. #ENG

They inspired a nation.

And we're particularly proud of Laura Bassett.

@laurabassett6 you can hold your head high and be proud #Lionesses

Laura, and the rest of the team, inspired a new generation of footballers.

@laurabassett6 you did the country proud...

And with that in mind, there's always next time.
