    Anne Frank Facts Everyone Should Know

    Seventy years ago, Nazis captured Anne Frank and her family. Learn more about this courageous young girl who inspired the world.

    Her family moved to the Netherlands when Hitler came to power in Germany.

    In 1940, when Hitler took control of the Netherlands, Ann was forced to transfer to a Jewish-only school.

    On her 13th birthday, she received a "diary" from her father. It was actually an autograph book.

    In her diary, Anne often confided to an imaginary friend named "Kitty."

    Soon after she received her diary, Anne's sister Margot was ordered by telegram to go to a work camp. Margot immediately went into hiding, and days later the rest of Anne's family followed.

    Anne and her family hid in a secret annex in the building where Anne's father worked. They were later joined by family friends.

    In addition to writing real-life entries in her diary, Anne wrote short stories and essays while in hiding.

    After hearing a radio broadcast urging Dutch people to keep journals and letters to record life under the Nazi regime, Anne edited her diary. She used pseudonyms for some of the people she wrote about.

    On August 4, 1944, Anne's family was discovered by German police.

    The person who provided the anonymous tip about where Anne and her family were hiding has never been identified.

    The last time Otto Frank, Anne's father, saw her and his family was when they arrived at Auschwitz, a death camp in Poland.

    In 1945, Anne and her sister were transferred to Bergen-Belsen, a concentration camp in Germany. There both died of typhus in March. Weeks later, Russian soldiers liberated the camp.

    Anne's father Otto was the only family member to survive the camps.

    Miep Gies, one of Otto's employees, helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Holocaust; she discovered Anne's diary and later gave it to Otto.

    In 1947 Otto had the diary published in the Netherlands under the title, "Het Acheterhuis" ("Rear Annex").

    Initially, U.S. publishers rejected the book, saying it was "very dull". In 1952, it was published by Doubleday under the title, "The Diary of a Young Girl."
