Can You Believe It? A Cheating Apology Got 1.26 Million Retweets On Weibo

A Chinese actor has broken the comments and retweets records on China's equivalent of Twitter after posting a public apology to his wife for having an affair with his co-worker.

This Monday, Wen Zhang, a Chinese film and television actor has broken the records of comments and retweets on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, after posting a public apology to his wife for having an affair with his co-worker, Yao Di, who acted as his wife in popular TV series "Naked Marriage".

Last weekend, the producer and chief-editor of Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly, a popular Chinese entertainment magazine, disclosed on Weibo that some people tried to bribe them for a piece of big news that would be published on Monday. Rumors suddenly spread that the news was related to Wen Zhang, 30, who has been married to the 38-year-old actress Ma Yili for six years and was always featured as a happily married family man.

Unexpectedly, the actor posted a lengthy message on Weibo this Monday before the news went published by the magazine, saying that "A mistake is a mistake. This has nothing to do with anyone else." He said the success of his career made him arrogant and conceitedly. "I've let down Ma Yili and our children. My mistake does not deserve to be forgiven, and it will be difficult for me to make amends for all the harm I've caused," he wrote. "But I want to do it. I have to do it. This is what I'll do for the rest of my life."

The post has attracted over one million comments and retweets in less than 10 hours, setting new records for Weibo. And the topic has soon trended above the missing Malaysia Airlines plane and a protest against a petrochemical plant in Maoming, Guangdong.

Ma Yili's quick response, saying "being in love is easy; being married is not. It is to be cherished", received over two million likes, one million comments and was shared 700,000 times.

Later on Monday, Wen tweeted another post, firing at the producer and chief-editor of Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly, which got 1.3 million comments and 432,000 retweets.

Though the whole records were still far behind the 3.4 million retweets on Twitter by American host Ellen DeGeneres with her selfie at the Oscars in March, it's still surprising that why so many people want to retweet a cheating apology?
