Things All New Students Should Know About Carmichael Library

Welcome to Montevallo! It might take you some time to get the hang of things around here, but don't fear the library!

I'm Christen, a student worker at Carmichael, and these are a few things I wish I had known about the library when I was a new student last year. You will be spending a lot of time here in the next few years, so learn how to get around now!

2. We have a lot to offer!

The Library has approximately 190,000 books, eBooks, and CDs #WOW. For days you don't have to study, check out a movie in the DVD section! The library homepage is the best place to start looking for books and other items you want. Just type a search into the WorldCat Local box!

3. We've got snacks and fun books!

Stop by Ollie's (at the front entrance of the library) and get yourself a snack before you hit the books. They take flex points or real money! There's a shelf by Ollie's called the Browsing Section, that's where you can find new magazines, newspapers, fiction, and nonfiction. It's a great place to find something fun to read (if you ever have the time!).

4. We all have questions!

There are a lot of questions in life! Let the librarians help you with questions about research or library resources! You can ask at the library, or you can use the library homepage to text or chat online.

5. Avoid the stink eye--know the rules of the floors!

The library has three floors and they each have different guidelines about noise. If you want to study and talk with friends, use the ground floor. If you want complete silence, use the top floor. The main floor is usually somewhere in between. And remember to step outside if you have to talk on the phone!

6. Look at all the cool stuff the Digital Media Lab has to offer!

In the DML you can check out Chromebooks, flip cams, and headphones. You can also use Macs that have the most recent version of Adobe software such as Photoshop, or get help making videos and podcasts.

7. The library can get you ANY book or article

If you can't find a book or article you need at Carmichael, you can order it for free through Interlibrary Loan.

8. Checking out is easy!

All you need is your student ID and you can check out books, DVDs, and more!
