    You Can Now Marry Yourself

I’ve always been a fan of weddings. They’re a beautiful symbol of taking a relationship to the next level - whether it’s an intimate gathering, a spectacle, or somewhere in between. But the key word there is relationship. Without a relationship, a wedding is unnecessary, right? Well, a Japanese company called Cera Travel is trying to prove that theory wrong. For the price of about $2750, Cera is selling a “solo wedding” package. They started the company to service divorcees and career-focused women with the wedding celebration that they have yet to experience in their lives. In the span of two days, they go through all of the activities that traditional brides typically have months or years to complete. The single-bride-to-be arrives in Kyoto and goes to a dress fitting straight out of Say Yes to the Dress. She picks out her flowers. She figures out her hair and makeup scheme. She takes part in a photo shoot -- either by herself or with a hand-picked male model to make it look more “authentic.” It all wraps up with a honeymoon night in a fancy hotel. Ten women have reportedly signed up for their own solo weddings. No word on what the demographics are for those women. I know the service is meant for older women who thought they missed out on that special day and wearing the “most important dress” they’ll ever choose (man, I’ve watched way too much Say Yes to the Dress). But who’s to say this won’t spiral into women who are fresh out of college signing up for a wedding after not finding a college sweetheart. My friend and I were just discussing when we think the interest in the ever-growing wedding industry is finally going to pique. If this solo wedding experience becomes a craze, my guess is that will be the beginning of the end.
