"The Hawkeye Initiative" Strikes Back Against Modern Comic Art
“How to fix every Strong Female Character pose in superhero comics: Replace the character with Hawkeye doing the same thing.” said Gingerhaze, creator of the Hawkeye Initiative. Artists took to Tumblr to fight back against badly drawn females in comics by replacing all of the badly-proportioned ladies with equally badly proportioned Hawkeyes. Yes, good.

trollprincess 6 months agoPardon my lack of surprise that there are people in the comments seriously complaining about the quality of the artwork between professional comic book artists and online artists doing this for free in their spare time, and managing to completely miss the whole goddamn point of the Hawkeye Initiative, which is that if you can’t draw a sexy female character without defying correct anatomical structures to do it, then you can’t f’ing DRAW.

Sarah C. 6 months agoThis is pretty funny. While well coloured. And “drawn”ed the poses are ridiculous. As are the Starfire wierd strident boobs. I know it’s comic and not supposed to be realistic but some comic art depicting women is beyond that and so offensively disproportionate that we might as well laugh it off.

catherinemaya 6 months agoI like the comments: “I study comics, and these ladiez is hot, and who wants to look at an ugly chix!”. Way to miss the point. The issue is not the hotness, the issue is half these women are drawn like they’re part dinosaur. The great thing about comics, is that the portrayal of masculinity is just as amplified as the sexuality of the females. (I love me some Wolverine, RWAR!). Instead of butchering the absolute hotness with lazy proportions, get a contortionist to model some poses, and draw those asses like a man whose seen a females ass somewhere other than in their imagination. It’s just lazy.

chantallew 6 months agoAs someone studying the comic book industry, I can tell you right now, for a FACT that if women were drawn realistically, in true to life poses and anatomy, there is NO WAY IN HELL comic books would sell. While the female demographics are growing, men are still far and away the leaders in comic book purchases. It’s just the nature of the beast. Hot chicks sell. It’s immature young men and boys who are still being polluted by the media and Hollywood with disproportionate anatomy. They’re being told from a younger and younger age that this is how women look; THIS is what you’re supposed to find attractive. Hot chicks have big tits, Hot chicks have thin waists, hot chicks have cute, pert, rounded asses, and personality wise, they’re all a couple of degrees from each other on a very limited spectrum. THIS is what men want to see. I’ve had professional artists tell me: “If you can draw T&A the way the “big two” (Marvel and DC) want to see it, you’re as good as hired,” but it’s not even about Marvel and DC anymore, it’s about the almighty dollar. I dare either company to put out a comic book with a super-heroine that isn’t “Hot” and we’ll see how long it stays on the shelves, even if it is written and drawn well. Men won’t buy it, and women probably won’t either… because we want to idealize our form. It’s the same reason we buy fashion magazines. Men do not find women attractive if they don’t fit into this “Hot” niche. They never have and they never will, particularly if they have to pay to look at them. This is a great little experiment, but it sure as hell isn’t going to change anything.

chantallew 6 months agoThis isn’t about anti-feminist, or racism, or any other negative social construct, this is about the law of nature, and economics. Men are attracted to women with obvious characteristics that the media (Television and photography today, books for hundreds and hundreds of years) has spent time hyping up. That’s not something that can’t be changed, and it won’t be changed by an industry that’s making billions of dollars a year doing it. This is not a crusade, it’s logical… but that doesn’t make it good.

Dwayne Samuels 6 months agoFar be it for me to argue with a comic book scholar, but maybe if they tone this stuff down they can grow the market beyond oversexed man babies.
-
trollprincess 6 months agoWait, how can it be about “the law of nature” and still feature female characters who defy the law of physics to bend the way they do?

axecat 6 months agoIf you’re talking style-wise, then yeah sure, the women are drawn better. If you’re talking anatomically, then I think you missed the point and have a bad sense of human anatomy. The Hawkeye Initiative is meant to raise awareness about the over-sexualization and general lack of anatomically correct poses portrayed in comic book women. You know, if it wasn’t obvious.

BrodiemanThe1st 6 months agoout of respect of the source material, i put them in the order they were posted on the tumblr. and fair enough about the art: it is by submission not from other comic artists.
