15 Rare And Wonderful Treasures From Disneyland

    The Walt Disney Archives pulled out some incredible artifacts in celebration of the park's 60th anniversary.

    So 2015 marks a very big year for Disneyland: On July 17, the park that Walt Disney built turned 60 years old.

    And in celebration of Disneyland's diamond anniversary, the folks over at the Walt Disney Archives put together a special exhibit at the D23 EXPO with awesome and rare park artifacts from its 60-year history.

    1. Original concept art for Disneyland.

    The concept art dates back to 1954, and was created to pitch the idea of the park to potential licensees on the East Coast.

    2. The first ticket sold at Disneyland.

    The ticket was purchased by Roy Disney, Walt's older brother, and it cost just $1. By comparison, an adult ticket today costs $99!

    3. An Abominable Snowman and an attraction vehicle from the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

    The Abominable Snowman animatronic was added to the attraction in 1978, along with the design of the attraction vehicle featured. The Abominable Snowman was removed earlier this year and replaced by a scarier version.

    4. An original animatronic pirate and model heads from the Pirates of the Caribbean.

    The animatronic pirate dates back to 1967, from when the ride first opened. The familiar-looking model head on the right is of Johnny Depp's iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, who was added to the attraction in 2006.

    5. Former props from the Country Bear Jamboree.

    The props, along with the animatronic of Baby Oscar, were once housed inside the Country Bear Jamboree, an animatronic show which closed at Disneyland in 2001 and was replaced by The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

    6. A vintage popcorn wagon.

    The popcorn wagon dates back to 1957, when a bag of popcorn cost just 15 cents!

    7. Animatronic figures of Wendy, John, and Michael, and attraction vehicle from Peter Pan's Flight.

    Peter Pan's Flight was one of the original opening day attractions in 1955. These animatronics, along with this vehicle design, were added in 1983, when Fantasyland was given its present-day redesign. The animatronics of the Darling children were removed from the ride earlier this year when the attraction was given an update.

    8. The Alice figure once featured inside the Alice in Wonderland ride.

    The figure — which was installed in the ride in 1984 as part the "New Fantasyland" redesign — was removed in 2013 when the ride was refurbished.

    9. Alice in Wonderland's Cheshire Cat float from the Main Street Electrical Parade.

    The iconic nighttime parade debuted in 1972, and ran at the park until 1996.

    10. Park merchandise from the 1950s.

    Included among the merchandise were ashtrays, Matterhorn piggy banks, and plastic kids construction hats.

    11. A Captain Rex animatronic from Star Tours.

    The original pilot of the StarSpeeder 3000 was retired in 2010, when the ride was redesigned and updated into the current Star Tours — The Adventures Continue.

    Fun fact: Captain Rex was voiced by Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman).

    12. Animatronic heads from America Sings.

    The animatronic musical show, which was showcased in a carousel theater, debuted in 1974 and closed in 1988. Almost all of the characters were moved over to Splash Mountain.

    13. Costumes from now-retired parades.

    The solider costume (left) was part of The Mulan Parade, which ran from 1998 to 1999. The Ben Franklin costume (right) was part of America on Parade, which ran from 1975 to 1976.

    14. Original costumes from the Jungle Book sequence in Fantasmic!.

    In case you don't remember, the monkeys dance alongside King Louie on barges in the scene where Kaa appears on the main stage.

    15. The original Maleficent dragon's head and costume from Fantasmic!.

    This Maleficent dragon's head was used from the show's debut in 1992 until about 2009, when it was eventually replaced with an enhanced version.

    And I do mean eventually: The dragon that replaced this one broke down various times before Imagineers solved the issue.
