    Fathers and Leaders

As it goes with the Commander in Chief and the country he leads so it is with the CEO and the company she leads down to the parents and the family dependent on them. Those with whom we are accountable to in many ways reflect who we are.

Exploring the Beauty of San Pedro, California

The little port town where I live has some of the most sincere, genuine and loving fathers, many of whom have multiple stories printed all over their bodies in ink and various metal or plastic attachments in their faces. Watching real men and women (real in every sense of the word), love and protect their families is a joy and a release. San Pedro as a municipality is a much older part of Los Angeles County. Originally it was a major fishing hub dating back to the 19th century with an artist colony hanging abouts, then add to the mix Italian, Croatian and Latino families that span generations, and you have an excellent representation of the American hodgepodge ripple effect that became California along the West (Left) Coast. The phrase “don't judge a book by it’s cover” rings loud and true in Port Town. These days running right along side and in many cases directly related to the proud and honorable named above, Port Town is packed full of (as my wife would say) longshoremen, dive bars and harbor chicks. Times may change, but principles shouldn’t.

Who we are inside at our core will at some point, reflect on the outside. Other people, particularly those whom we love are watching us so your character has to reflect in more than just your words. It seems the act of The Sincere Apology has almost completely disappeared from the American culture. Every action and explanation the government official or CEO caught doing whatever they do have been consistent with the teachings of deny, deny, deny. Now for the past few generations few seem to be adult enough to take responsibility for their actions what ever those actions may be. I believe character runs so deep within that it’s one thing to lie to other people but when you can lie to yourself and then believe that lie, it is at that point when you have crossed into dangerous territory.

In general, people want the same things from life today that families and individuals wanted three hundred years ago. Some men want nothing more than to raise their children to reach a step or two farther than they as parents were able to succeed. The local and world news seems to focus so much on the masculine at our worst. Yet all of us are guilty of stereotyping people or assigning a ‘personality trait’ to an individual for no other reason than because of physical appearance or zip code. The character of a man can be seen in the interaction he has with his family. There is something to be said about being a good man.

In his book Revolutionary Characters: Revolutionary Characters: What Made The Founding Fathers Different by Gordon S. Wood, the author states:

    - “What set (George) Washington apart and made him great? It was not his intellect. It was not his martial prowess. It was not his writing skill. It was his character.” Washington quickly recognized that his reputation would become indistinguishable from that of the government he would bring into being. -
