Waves for Water Works with Hurley and Pro Surfer Rob Machado

Pro-surfer Rob Machado recently joined Hurley in the Waves for Water campaign aiming to bring awareness to global water quality.

Waves for Water is an organization focused on bringing clean and filtered water to those in need around the world. They provide clean water solutions worldwide through ongoing projects and their volunteer program, Clean Water Countries. CWC is based on a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) humanitarian model, where everyday people, including travellers, distribute filters to those they encounter around the globe. Professional surfer Rob Machado recently joined the movement along with Hurley International, a California clothing company whose mission is to build awareness around the issue of clean water.

Machado has won many of pro surfing's most prestigious contests, including Hawaii's Pipeline Masters and the U.S. Open of Surfing, and he has gained sponsors along the way such as Hurley, Reef and Channel Islands. Currently, Machado resides in California with his wife and son, where he surfs for clean water. This tie to surfing and the need for clean water explains his connection with Hurly, surfing and thus his resulting philanthropic heart. Hurley recently joined with Waves for Water among others to make the subject of bringing fresh water to areas in need a major focal point of the community.

Over the past few years, Waves for water has spread over 100,000 filters across the globe. These filtration systems not only bring clean, refillable water systems to countries in need, but also help eliminate plastic bottle usage. Specifically, Waves for Water has set up filtration centers in Haiti, Indonesia, Pakistan and Chile. Each location has received significant success and with the recent partnership between pro surfers like Machado and Water for Waves, the reach of these filters has become massive and continues to grow each day.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 out of every 6 people do not have access to clean water. Waves for Water is working to diminish this. Up to date, they have distributed 4,000 filters to Haiti by via just word of mouth. Hurley International continues its efforts by doing away with the role of plastic bottles and installing water dispensers on beaches for surfers to use.
