The Truth About Being An Assistant In Publishing

You’ve got to start at the bottom to get to the top.

    1. Hey! You got your first job in publishing!

    2. First day - try to make a good impression.

    3. Don’t get distracted by all the books.

    4. Mastering the telephone system will require all your cunning.

    5. Not to mention the photocopier…

    6. And then there’s the moment you realise you can’t sit and read all day but you actually have to use a computer.

    7. Your first book launch will be an experience.

    8. You will learn things you didn’t know about yourself.

    9. Meeting authors is a treat.

    10. Try and remain professional.

    11. Never underestimate the importance of the coffee/tea round.

    12. Same goes for lunch orders.

    13. The Christmas party will be the making of you.

    Even if you’re THAT person:

    14. And even if occasionally you have to learn the hard way…

    15. Just remember the books. The glorious, fabulous books.
