If you've got a friend in Pennsylvania, chances are your Instagram feed has been clogged with filtered photos of fastnachts all day. The traditional fried dough is served on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent.
The holiday, also known as Fat Tuesday, is celebrated around the world with traditions like Carnival in Brazil and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. But in PA, we do it with doughnuts.
Fastnacht Day is tied to Pennsylvania's German roots. Bakeries around the state make hundreds of fastnachts and often sell out each year. Enjoy them plain, glazed, with powdered or with cinnamon sugar.
