jamesr22 a year agoI’m Japanese and I don’t find 4 really to be all that racist. Aside from using the term “Japs” (which was pretty universal, NY Times et al did it) it is WAY less racist than pretty much any other WW2 related advertising concerning Japanese. It’s actually shooting down a stereotype, and sort of calling the Japanese badass, a backhanded compliment.

aln2 a year agoIn this material we see the broken thinking of the age, and this is the important part, reformulated for us by advertising, to tell a fiction, to sell something. The process distills hate, makes it seem prettier, safer and more mainstream. Lynch-safe rope, Cherokee Whiskey, cute hate. Chilling.

Baiciyu a year agoAunt Jemima was initially marketed as a freed slave (and as a ‘Mammy’) with the intent of promoting the products to lower-class white people who couldn’t afford servants. I’m on the fence about this post. This is definitely ‘advertising at its very worst’ and I’m sure more than a few people laughed, but these ads also represent racist stereotypes that have been perpetuated for more than a century through various media outlets. They help keep racism alive. I’m not saying we should pretend they don’t exist, but we should have some understanding of the attitudes behind the ads and how they affect the population at large.
