Tour Dates - Arc And Stones Release Debut EP

Brooklyn based band attempts to mix blues and alternative rock. Alternative rock wins.

Arc & Stones is a Brooklyn based group creating alternative rock music with a slight blues twang. Although they compare themselves to such bands as Gary Clark Jr., Black Keys and Kings of Leon they are more alternative rockers than blues artists. To their credit the vocals attempt to achieve the emotion found in blues, however they never truly hit the mark. This is a real shame because as a listener you hear the voice straining to take us to the next level and you want Arc & Stones to succeed. Sadly, there just isn't enough pain or heartache emitted lyrically, melodically or vocally. Partially because lead vocals are sung from the nose rather than the pain and spit of the belly.

On the positive side, the absence of soulful vocals is somewhat made up for by an ambition heard in their music. It's clear these guys want to be the next big thing and I bet they give a kick ass rock show. Unfortunately they just never really make it to that "next level" that they so desperately want. The band sounds green which, at times, can make their music sound forced and contrived.

Perhaps it is a disservice to compare yourself to seasoned artists like Gary Clark Jr, The Black Keys or Muse. For one, these bands have perfected their sound and consistency. Even Gary Clark Jr, who may seem like an overnight success, has been playing blues clubs since he was 16 years old. This is a guy who grew up tuning his guitar with the likes of Pinetop Perkins and Jimmy Vaughn. Respect. Secondly, describing your sound to bands Muse and Black Keys seems damn near impossible. It certainly piques curiosity, but if you can't deliver your listener will be very disappointed.

Arc & Stones are simply put, an alternative rock group with a slight blues layer to their rock sound. Not terrible for their 1st EP as it sets up an interesting preview to the band's future. However as a listener I'll let them work out the kinks on the EP and stay tuned to their second release. Because the follow up album has some real potential. Check 'em out on twitter and band camp.
