Where In The World Is Bo Gua-Gua?

Disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai reportedly charged with economic crimes. But his son Bo Guagua has hardly been heard from since he graduated from Harvard. Where is he?

While a Report Tuesday on the website Shanghaiist claimed that Bo Xilai confessed in prison to "economic crimes", we still haven't heard much about his son, the American and British-educated playboy Bo Guagua.

Bo Xilai was the former mayor of Chongqing and member of China's ruling Politburo. He was brought down in February 2012 when his police chief fled to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu and implicated him and his wife in the murder of a British businessman.

Bo Xilai's son, known by the affectionate nickname "guagua" (which literally means melon), gained notoriety at Oxford and Harvard for his lavish parties and poor study habits, an example of children of wealthy officials being sent abroad. Many question how he was accepted into Harvard's Kennedy School with a record of poor achievement at Oxford. However, there are a handful of offspring of global leaders currently studying at Harvard, including the daughter of current Chinese president Xi Jinping.

While his son has never been charged directly, "Bo has reportedly confessed to moving a million dollars to overseas accounts, under the names of relatives and acquaintances in the US, Britain and other countries", as reported Tuesday in Shanghaiist and Chinese dissident website Boxun . These crimes might directly involve Bo Guagua, whose lavish exploits and spending were questioned in light of his dubious claim that his schooling was being completely funded by scholarships and his mother's "private funds".

Interestingly, the ambiguous wording of "economic crimes" was the same phrase used in Ai Weiwei's 2011 detention by authorities in Beijing.

    But where is he...

Actually he may be in China...

As reported in the Telegraph last October, Bo Guagua allegedly returned to China after graduating from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government in 2012. But with his father Bo Xilai in detention since his arrest in 2011, the fate of his party-loving son Bo Guagua has been unknown. If he returned to China out of his own will, is he assisting authorities in the investigation of his family? Although Chinese authorities have not charged Guagua, his exploits in America could be investigated in connection with his family's finances. And as his mother Gu Kailai claimed at her trial last year, she murdered the British businessman Neil Heywood after he threatened Guagua.
