NYPD Message To Women: Keep Wearing Skirts If You Want To Get Raped
Police in NYC are advising women in Brooklyn to avoid wearing skirts due to the recent attacks in Park Slope. Yeah, because a rapist is not going to attack you when you’re wearing sweatpants. Way to perpetuate victim blaming, NYPD.
Lauren, who did not want her last name used, told the the Wall Street Journal that she was walking down the street in shorts and a t-shirt after leaving the gym on Monday when she was stopped by an officer who also stopped two other women in dresses.
Lauren said the officer asked them if they knew what was happening in the area, and asked them if they knew what the suspect looked for.
“He pointed at my outfit and said, ‘Don’t you think your shorts are a little short?’” she told the Journal. “He pointed at their dresses and said they were showing a lot of skin.”

deleond2 a year agoThough no one deserves to be raped, molested, killed, or stolen from, What is wrong from doing what you can to draw attention away from yourself? Of course we need to remember, regardless of what preventative steps we take, there is no way to prevent 100% of the bad things in the country. Just to give some examples…. #1 People recommend not to leave fancy/valuable objects (in plain site) in your car, because this may make your care a target for thieves. During Holiday Season they also recommend not to leave presents in plain site. #2 - Some may suggest not to flash large amounts of cash in public cause it could make you a target for a mugger. #3 - We teach are children, and try to give them advice so they may not be an easier target for a pedophile. #4 - And finally, some suggest not to show off too much skin for it will draw negative attention to you….and possibly even a rapist. Though an innocent person is not at fault when a crime is committed against them, preparation and the proper mindset is important to try to reduce the chances of being a target. I would think most people can say #1-#3 are good ideas, so why would #4 all of a sudden be a bad/sexist/mean one? I guess alot of it would come down to how the advice is phrased.

Corey B. a year agoThis argument is part of the same argument that strict Muslims use to keep their women covered from head to toe…the idea that men can’t control themselves if exposed to female skin. At the risk of repeating what people should know, rape is NOT about sexuality or arousal, it is about power, violence, and the thrill of subjugating someone. Wearing even a burqa would not guarantee a rape-free world. Stop promoting the ignorance, police!

It’s not the rapest’s fault if your cleavage is showing and they can’t control themselves, right? Okay, so I’ll just assume that all men are disgusting fucking bastards who have absolutely zero self-control when it comes to their own sexual desires. It is never a women’s fault when she is raped. Never.
Yes, I know not to wear provocative clothing out late at night, and all women should be aware of the kind of attention they attract. But that is because of people like the man in this video. Rape isn’t caused by us, it’s caused by rapists. Don’t anyone dare try to blame it on women. -

This is about a specific rapist (or group of rapists). I absolutely hate the mindset that women are the cause of rapes, but this isn’t really what was happening here. The cops just want to keep as many women safe as possible until these specific, small-clothes-loving rapists are caught. It’d be like warning blonde women to stay indoors at night if that’s what these specific people preferred.

mrdrofficer a year agoI think the fact that my comment was deleted shows this site is heavily censoring anything that isn’t “Yeah, go feminism, fuck the cops.” But the officer’s warning is because the rapists preference is women showing a lot of skin. If the rapists preference was guys in glasses or old ladies in strollers, the officer would be warning them instead. /end rant.
