Bull By The Horns: The Recipe For A One-Of-A-Kind CIMMFest Award By David Rocco Facchini

Here's a step-by-step instruction of how the Short Documentary Award, BULL BY THE HORNS, was visualized and constructed for the Chiacgo International Movie and Music Festival (cimmfest.org) for 2014. by just using a few simiple household items, coupled with some reclaimed movie and music production equipment, this one-of-a-kind award is something the winner will enjoy for ages!

BULL BY THE HORNS

YIELD: One Short-Documentary Award

TIME: 2 Weeks

MATERIALS:

1 Drill

1 3/4" Male XLR Jack

2 8mm Film Editing Cranks

2 16mm Film Editing Spindles

1 Stereo Knob

2 Tripod pole rubber feet

2 Springs

1 Pair of Bike Brakes

2 Red Beads

1 Mini Disc

Nuts, Washers and Bolts to fasten

I guess you can say this one was handed down to me from my dad, since this was his drill. I've held onto it a long time for sentimental reasons, but when inspiration struck, I decided, instead of keeping it unused in my tool cabinet for another decade, I should turn it into a unique piece of art for others to enjoy, so... ENJOY!

1. Pre-cut drill

The drill was made from an aluminum alloy so I knew it would be easy to with. Seeing how the back handle looked uniquely like a bull horn and the remaining body seemed a perfect fit for the bull torso.

2. Dissected Drill

I strategically disected the drill with a hacksaw, removing both handles from the body.

I attached one handle to the drill front using threaded nuts, bolts and washers.

4. Spindles & Horn Tip

Drilling length-wise through the handle, I was able to thread the 16mm film editing spindles on either end, creating the points to the bull's horns.

5. Disassembled Bike Brake

Disassembled bike brake holders seemed to be the perfect shape for the hind legs of the bull, so I cut them to length, and threaded a silver spring per leg.

6. Attached Legs

I was able to attach them to the torso via nuts and bolts at the foot.

7. Hooves

I hot-glued some rubber tripod leg caps to create the hooves. I love hot glue.

I was excited to use these 16mm Rewind Cranks for the front legs but was concerned that attaching them to the torso would prove difficult, however the front legs were much easier to attach than I had anticipated. I love when that happens!

9. 16mm Spindle on Torso

All I had to do was match my drill bit size with the width of the spindle pin, and simply insert the pin into the hole. Easy!

10. Knob

In order to camouflage the cut hole from where the trigger handle of the drill existed, I was able to attach a Stereo Knob that worked perfectly.

11. Tail

The tail was fun to put together! I kept a section attached to the body of the drill as a platfrom to fasten the tail, by using a nut and bolt. At the open end of the chord, I was able to insert a 3/4" Male XLR Jack, creating a pointed tail.

I added finishing touches like two red beads inserted as eyes...

Finally, I disassembled and degreaased all the parts, and reassembled it for a clean look,

The key to repurposing anything into a sculpture is being able to analyze the shapes that compose the whole of the item.

From there, decide if disecting that item will happen cleanly and easily with the resources you have available to you.

If you try to hard, or don't have the right tools, it'll show. Don't be discouraged if your initial idea doesn't end up working out! The beauty in working with repurposed items is that there's always another found object around the corner that'll work perfectly. Just keep your eyes open for it! O'le!!
