Radio Host Helps Domestic Violence Victim Live On Air Today

This afternoon I reluctantly got in my car to head to McDonald’s. I wasn’t planning on cooking dinner tonight so after my teenager won the gun fight (Nerf and water) I relented and we left to get her favorite fast food meal. As we left our driveway I turned on my favorite radio show, Drew Garabo Live and got my entire emotional life.
Drew was taking calls like he does every afternoon and a young lady named Nicole called and mentioned that she fell and broke her hand. Her admission had nothing to do with the topic but as he often does he pressed her to tell him how she really broke it. My jaw dropped as she explained that her boyfriend who was WITH HER IN THE CAR broke it. She tried to grab his phone and he “accidently” grabbed her hand so hard that they heard a snap. They were coming back from the ER when she called the show. I believe the universe connected them to the right person at the right time. Drew kept her talking about their relationship and even asked to speak to her boyfriend, Jeff. By this time I was at the drive-thru and had to turn the radio down. I think I threw my money at the poor worker and grabbed the food at the 2nd window. Jeff was on the phone by this time and instead of tearing him a new asshole Drew very smoothly talked to him. He not only got him to admit what he did in breaking her hand but he also admitted his repeated drug use and mental health issues. The whole time I was quite scared for them both since this was not the first time they’d become physical. Drew asked them both individually if he could find someone to help them if they would take advantage of it and thankfully they agreed. I’ve heard less serious situations on other radio programs and they caller is typically put on hold while a phone screener gets their information.
Here’s where it gets incredibly intense. Drew got Nicole to step away and he was able to get her to admit she needed help immediately. Prior to that while she was in front of Jeff he asked her to say “Rutabaga” if she wanted him to get the police getting involved, she giggled and said rhubarb. I could feel through the radio that was not a hard no, it was an overwhelming yes. She stepped away and he convinced them to get to a landmark and that help was on the way. I can only imagine that since the boyfriend had used drugs earlier in the day that he did not realize the help that was on the way.
Yup, the cops showed up blaring Drew’s show in the background. The power of live radio connecting people combined with social media got this woman help in a way that did not further injure her. Nicole burst into tears and thanked him and his staff over and over. I was back in the driveway at this point, my teen already finished with her meal and I sat there tears in my eyes, moved by the humanity and absolute gentleness that this situation was handled with. Faith in humanity restored!
