Breastfeeding Three-Year-Old On “Time” Magazine Cover Might Regret This Later
Next week’s Time cover features a mom proudly breastfeeding her three-year-old. Hope the magazine is planning on paying this kid’s therapy bills.
Forever more, Jamie Lynne Grumet’s son will be the kid who was suckling at his mom’s breast on the cover of Time. I’d say this will come back to haunt him when he’s older, but in the picture, he looks kind of upset already.

Makena Kai a year agoThe fact that Time magazine chose that particular shot for the cover—where the child is looking directly at the camera—seems very exploitative to me. They could have easily chosen a shot where the child’s face was in profile.

lamewoskic a year agoMine weaned himself at 18 months. To each their own. Breastfeeding is a special thing between mother and child. What I find disturbing with the pic is how blatant it is. Feed your child mother’s milk, don’t shove it in everyone’s face and down their throats. I feel this way about everyone’s rights- be it drug use, homosexuality, fetishes, or anything else.

crazy kat a year agoI’m fine with breastfeeding your kids, as long as they aren’t old enough to ask verbally for it that is! Past the age of three is a bit wrong to me, mainly because it seems you are still trying to keep them coddled with you for the rest of their life. If you want to keep giving them your breast milk FROM A GLASS or a sippy cup by all means, but getting it from the source is just creepy after a certain age. Sorry but it is!

Liberal single women are so trusting that other women will make conscientious choices in all matters abortion, but have no such trust in raising children. Dariana a year agoI wish Shift decided to, you know, instead of just mock the boy, use this opportunity to open up a discussion about not only breast feeding, but the competitive tone the headline uses (i.e. ‘mom enough’). Instead of embracing motherhood, both Shift AND Time make it an act of judgement—that ‘we’ get to both judge mothers (because we somehow know better than them) and simultaneously ‘they’ get to judge us (because, pfft, we know nothing about REAL mothering). Stuff like this pisses me off. Why pit women against each other? Why do we allow it and respond to it?

Candice29 a year agoThere is nothing wrong with breast feeding a 3 yr old child. In fact the longer a woman breast feeds the more beneficial it becomes for both the mother and child, for instance it can prevent breast cancer for the mother and the child may have less allergies or become less ill as he/she gets older. I haven’t read the article and I am not familiar with attachment parenting, or whatever its called, but I’m all in for breast feeding.
