"Dragon Age: Inquisition" Will Not Be Released In India Because It Has A Gay Character In A Central Role

Simon Smith-Wright, Regional Marketing Director, Asia Pacific at Electronic Arts stated to NDTV Gadgets, that the release was pulled in order to avoid a breach of local content laws.

Publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has reportedly cancelled the release of the role playing game Dragon Age: Inquisition in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The cancelled release of the highly anticipated game is reportedly due to one of it's central character's sexual orientation. Players are supposedly able to have romantic or sexual relationship with the character only if their own avatar (character they play with) is male as well.

According to NDTV Gadgets, Simon Smith-Wright, Regional Marketing Director, Asia Pacific at Electronic Arts has confirmed the news.

"In order to avoid a breach of local content laws, EA has withdrawn Dragon Age: Inquisition from sale in India and the game is no longer available for pre-order. Customers who pre-ordered the game will be contacted directly and will be fully refunded," Smith-Wright said in an email to NDTV Gadgets.

He also added, “The current action we’ve taken only affects Dragon Age Inquisition.”

According to the same report, the distributor for the game, Milestone Interactive also explained that rather than offend a section of India's more conservative society, they have decided to not release the game in India.

As per a dna report, Milestone Interactive released this statement: "Rather than face the wrath of some of India’s more prudish segments of society, EA have pre-emptively decided to make the game unavailable in India, without confirming or commenting on which local laws were being breached."
