With her arms flowing to the music, her feet working the stage and her infectious smile. This is how we remember her. A light that refuses to go out.
After her sudden death at the age of 23, she continued to skyrocket by breaking records and winning awards for her music. Her music is timeless, and for those whom were lucky enough to see her in concert, they say, "it felt like she was singling you out and talking to you ".
Her music was coming out at a time when Latinos were not taken seriously as a market. Even more so, she was a woman in a music genre dominated by men. But she had her family who believed in her and put everything at stake to share this talent. And key to her success, were her fans that span decades and felt a connection with her.
So what did she teach us in her short life?
In her own words:
"If you have a dream, don't let anyone take it away. Be strong-minded and always think the impossible is possible. "
So today, turn up "No Me Queda Mas", sing to "Como La Flor", se vale llorar (it's okay to cry).
