Sorority Silence, Lambs To Slaughter
I am not a journalist, and have no real talent in story-writing, but I want someone to explore this: **also, I don't know the picture rules... i'm sure someone can find a better one. I live in Raleigh, NC, and in the wake of the ATO alleged sexual assault (and FYI there was another report of sexual assault at the DSP house in January which is off campus because I believe they lost their charter), I think someone should look into sorority girls and their role in these situations. I was not in a sorority, nor did I have much interested in Greek life in college, but now I am a 29 year old teacher locally, and I have a few teacher friends who were in sororities. Although the women attending these frat parties are by and large sorority girls, they do not have proactive measures to protect themselves and their sisters. This week, I was at dinner with two sorority alums, and when I asked them, "Hey guys, when you're going to a mixer or a function with frats, what do your leadership tell you to do if you feel like you're being assaulted?" They both stared at me blankly. This was after we talked about the sorority leadership having rules for their daily makeup/hair/clothes, how to behave at a function with or without a date, the ways in which they were allowed to speak to/address each other in public vs. at a function... they have rules for literally EVERYTHING, but they take zero proactive action to prevent their sisters from being attacked at these drunken mixers OR to arm their sisters with a legitimate defense. It's like they are sending lambs to the slaughter. What's worse is that in the limited experience I have in speaking with the sorority girls, current or alum, they tend to side with the frat and victim-blame. "Well, they knew what they were doing when they went to a frat party. If they wanted to stay in control, they shouldn't have been drinking." --legit quotes about the recent assault... Sorry, what meant to be a suggestion turned into a novel. Like I say, I'm no writer, and I don't have a ton of facts, but I think this is an interesting and slightly scary story.
