the Spam sushi thing is more philipino than Japanese. The crust removing tool is totally japanese. they have hundreds of little food tools and rice presses here.
And we don't waste the crusts. We use them to make rusk crackers or (my personal favorite) all crust pizza. gotta love Japanese trash cooking!

Spam is pretty common, I can't say strictly for Japan but I know in hawaii it was considered a staple food item because everything had to be shipped in and spam would last longer than actual meat. It's probably similar to any american that likes Kraft Mac and Cheese (In terms of it being a childhood staple).
