Australians "Heartbroken" After Camp Gallipoli In Sydney Washed Out

UPDATE: An event offering the opportunity to "camp out under the stars like our brave ANZACs" postponed due to sodden ground has been moved to a new location.

Camp Gallipoli is billed as "a once in a lifetime opportunity" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing by "sleeping out under the stars as the original Anzacs did 100 years ago."

A video promoting the event says Australians can "camp out like our brave ANZACS did."

But on Thursday morning, organisers have had to call off the event due to bad weather.

As a result of severe weather conditions the Sydney Camp Gallipoli event has been postponed. Please see http://t.co/3qGUB5KUiE for more info

A spokesperson for the event told BuzzFeed News that it was a difficult decision, but due to the recent Sydney storms, "Centennial Park is a foot deep underwater."

It's with sadness we advise @CampGallipoli in @CentParklands has been postponed due to unsafe conditions (see pic).

In an official statement on the Camp Gallipoli Facebook page, organisers said it would have been "irresponsible" to allow the Sydney event to go ahead on Friday.

It's believed the event will be moved to a date later in the year.

People who'd bought $121 tickets said the news was "bitterly disappointing", whilst others were angry that the event had been postponed rather than cancelled.

Many people were asking for refunds.

UPDATE: The organisers have found a new home for the event, at the nearby Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park.

This is what the original campsite ground looked like this morning.

The announcement also drew criticism on Twitter, with people pointing out the irony of an event that was meant to mirror the ANZAC experience being cancelled due to wet weather.

Camp Gallipoli "postponed" in Sydney because of wet weather. Just like the real thing, right?

authentic Anzac experience not comfortable enough apparently https://t.co/A1i8qKB60y

Considering Camp Gallipoli's ads - which sold it as an authentic ANZAC experience - its cancellation due to rain is pretty hilarious.

Most people were excited that the Sydney event would still go ahead, posting "That's the Aussie spirit!" on the Facebook page. But you can't please everyone.
