Harris Cox who was spent 6 years in a medically induced coma after being set on fire in a deliberate act of violence emerged from his coma angry at the world. By 16 he had dropped out of school and became a drug dealer and went to jail. After getting out of jail, he was homeless and without connections. At 21 he came to Civicorps, the only accredited high school and job training program for youth 18-27 in Oakland, CA and graduated two years later. He now is attending college and teaches mindfulness to middle school students in a trouble school.
He was recognized as a Corpsmember of the Year by the national Corps Network on Monday. This was his extraordinary speech that received a standing ovation, with many of the members of the audience with tears in their eyes.
"This is my life that I am blessed to share. A life story of me reaching and flying for hope."
