Nationalist Hecklers Storm Jim Murphy's Better Together Speech

"How am I a supporter of apartheid?" is not something you might expect to hear from an MP at a Better Together event in Glasgow, yet this is just one the strange scenarios facing Jim Murphy on his "100 Speeches in 100 days" campaign on Scottish independence.

Jim Murphy MP had to deal with some very vocal opponents at his latest speech in Shawlands on the topic of Scottish independence.

The MP is currently travelling around Scotland on his #100Streets campaign, which he is using to promote the Better Together vision to voters. Unfortunately for Mr Murphy, his reception in Shawlands was less than welcoming.

Some Yes supporters bombarded the MP for East Renfrewshire with accusations of "war criminal" and being a "supporter of apartheid", whilst others decided to continuously shout over the Better Together campaigner, and meanwhile, some of the more creative hecklers opted to show off their arses as a sign of their sympathies towards the Labour politician.

Mr Murphy's #100Street journey has clearly not been without some difficulty. The MP says that he has been heckled throughout his campaign by a "noisy nationalist minority" during his speeches. But he also claims: "...I've never enjoyed any political campaign more than this #100Streets tour. There's an authenticity about it. I have no idea who is going to turn up or what is going to be said or what insults (or bottles) are going to be hurled at me." Despite the fun being had on the tour, it may appear to some that the MP has had a tough time trying to connect with some of the electorate on the big questions.

With over 50 streets left to visit, the Labour politician will look forward to many more heated debates, insults to brush-off, and bottles to dodge if he is to finish his campaign. It will be interesting to see (from a distance) how he gets on if his opposition remain as vocal and defiant as they were in Shawlands.
