Poem In Response To The Rising Homicide Rate Of Black Teens

This poem reflects on America’s rising rate of murders committed against black teenagers, the most infamous being Trayvon Martin.

    "Walking While Black"

If the sky is darker than your skin

Stay indoors until the sun rises again

Don't let it chilly before you leave

Yesterday, today, when is your death's eve?

Walking while black, that is your crime

Honors student but your life is still worth a dime

The air is filled with children's cackles

They do not yet know that they're walking with shackles

If your skin resembles a paper bag's hue

Understand you can't live as the other kids do

He looked like trouble, don't blame me

His guns, loaded, were candy and tea
